We will be on Kauai around Christmas and we would like to do some hiking and birding. Any tips about the Alakai Swamp trail? How is the Koke’e Lodge? Other suggestions? TIA.
Aloha. It can be very wet in December and the trail does get sloppy and slippery on the boardwalk in wet conditions. Wear good boots and be ready for rain, if clouds are above. It is a hard walk and you should be in decent condition, but if not raining many birds and great vistas can be seen from this hike. Worth walking unless it is a Monsoon.Check out the Park's webpage on the Alakai Swamp Trail. See:
The only problem is that the Park says a 3.5 mile trail. but to get to it is another couple of miles, so talk about 9-10 mile walk/hike. Bring water and stay hydrated. Aloha. :-)
