Hi,

you can use the Deutsche Bahn website to check the details of your trip.

bahn.de/international/view/e...

bahn.de/international/view/e...

will give you train times, fares and details in English.

Journey takes from just over an hour to 1h 25m. One-way standard fare from 19 euro if you use the IC.

If you take the S-bahn you will need direction Mosbach (Baden). Clicking on the arrow at the side of each bahn.de departure will give you details of the journey, including platform number and a list of stops.

Train destinations, stops and platform numbers are usually displayed electronically at stations. If not, there are printed timetables on display at stations).

S-bahn fare is not displayed on bahn.de, but I'm pretty sure it will be less than 19 euro (possibly quite a lot less).

Kaiserslautern and Heidelberg are both inside the VRN local public transport network. Thus for regional trains and S-Bahn trains the VRN tariff applies. VRN tickets are zone-to-zone local public transport tickets. Thus they cover also the buses in Kaiserslautern and the trams and buses in Heidelberg.
vrn.de/imperia/md/content/se...

VRN single ticket Kaiserslautern - Heidelberg is EUR 8,30.
24 hours ticket is EUR 13,50.
24 hours ticket mini group version (2-5 persons) is EUR 19,50.

DB timetable
reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/qu...
From: Kaiserslautern
To: Heidelberg
To: Heidelberg Altstadt
and select as means of transport "only local transport" if you like to use VRN tickets (but their prices won't be shown by the DB timetable).

With the S-Bahn trains S1 or S2 you can travel directly to the stop Heidelberg Altstadt as this one is closer to the old town (= Altstadt in German) and the castle.

On this map (sector 8) the station Altstadt is still labeled Karlstor (Karl's Gate) station - its old name.
