Jura Travel Answers

Jura, the Deer Island

I visited Jura last year, and had a great adventure. I hiked to the Barnhill location where George Orwell wrote his famous book, "1984". From there I walked to view the Corryvreckan Whirlpool, where Orwell almost drowned, along with his 2-year old son.

Does anyone know the name of the Lobsterman who picked Orwell and his party off the little rock where they were stranded in August of 1947?

For anyone who wants to get a glimpse of the era in which Orwell lived in Scotland (and see the film version of the whirlpool), there is an old movie available called "I Know Where I'm Going", which was released in 1947.
