How long do you have? What are you interested in?

Beautiful places or very cultural places. Not too far from Tokyo since we're only staying a few days. Hakone seems to have lots of beauty and hot springs. I guess the next question would be which hotels are good to stay at.

Kamakura is half way between Hakone and Tokyo (kind of). It used to be the capital of Japan. Nice Architecture, nice gardens BIG buddha

Don't forget Yokohama. Not only bayside area with lots of attractions but there are some nice western houses at Yamate area and Japanese gardens of Sankeien and Shomyoji Garden.

If you fancy a full day trip, Nikko isn't hard to get to. Better for unique temples and shrines that you won't see anywhere else (at least not easily)

Hakone is a nice day trip too, but more for nature.

Kamakura is better for an older taste of Japan. It is as close to Kyoto as you can get without going to Kyoto, although you can't get Kyoto anywhere else except Kyoto. :) Kamakura is also known for its beaches.

Narita is also well known but often skipped by tourists unless you are visiting for just a day and have time from Narita Airport. The temple is supposed to be nice, but I have never been.

Mt. Takao is a nice easy day hike. You can cut it down to half a day if you take the cable car up.
