I saw on a newer atlas, that in Iowa, there is some Future Birthplace of Captain Kirk. It wasn't there before. But I don't know if this means future as in, it hasn't been built yet, or future as in Captain Kirk was born in the future.
Are there any Trekies who can solve this mystery?
And please, please. Do not move this question. This is a perfectly legitimate question for the Iowa forum.
Going to Leclaire Iowa from Orland Park Il need a scenic route to travel with some history involved.
I know I will be in Iowa (Iowa City, to be exact, although I shall drive around as well) for a week in mid-August.
I know that Iowa is slap-bang in the middle of 'Tornado Alley'.
I am a Brit. We do not generally have tornadoes in the UK, and those that we do have (rarely) are very small and very localised. So my question is simply this..what do I do if a) the tornado siren sounds and/or b) I see a tornado when I'm driving around?
Drive swiftly in the opposite direction? Stay in the car? Park and seek shelter? Try to get inside a building?
If I ask about things and know what to do, chances are (ime) they won't happen. That's what I've found, anyway....
I am thinking of visiting a friend who resides in Iowa and to visit the surrounding cities. What would be a suggested itinerary / route? My thinking is to do a 14 days trip. It's my first time to the US so I am kind of lost...
I would like to experience the local lifestyle, visit some famous places, explore and do some shopping etc...
Thank you in advance.
I am looking for an Under 21 Club in Souix City. Can anyone help me?
Where can I find this iron bridge?
I'm going to Omaha, NE at the end of April/early May, and was hoping to venture into Iowa for the first time (Council Bluffs area). I'd love tips on nearby must-sees/must-eats!
My fiance's family is from the midwest: Iowa (Iowa City area) and Illinois (Aurora area/West of Chicago), and we want to have our wedding in this area, but I have no idea what is available for weddings other than churches. I want to have an outside wedding that just takes someone's breath away: beach (I know I'm not going to find this here), gardens, park, ???
Does anyone have any ideas or locations that would help me and my fiance out? We don't have a huge budget, however, so all though some areas in Chicago are beautiful I'm not sure we could afford them. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
I will have a visitor coming in from Cedar Rapids Iowa. I'm wondering what to feed her. Generally, as a local of Iowa, would it be meat (beef/pork), fish other seafoods, chicken for her? Bread, potato, or rice?
would anyone of you like to go to Mount Rushmore on July 3rd and July 4th for the Independence Day celebrations?
I will be on a Greyhound trip through the US. Since bus service between Sioux Falls (South Dakota, close to Iowa border) and Rapid City as well as public transportation around Rapid City is very rare, I will rent a car in Sioux Falls on the morning of July 3rd and drive over to Mount Rushmore.
If anyone wants to join me going west on July 3rd and/or going east on July 4th, then please let me know...
My husband and me would be in Iowa for about 3 months starting from May'08.
Can anyone suggest us nearby states that we can visit during our stint here. Also, how far would be Canada from here?
Anybody going on the bike ride later this month?
My Danish girlfriend and I are planning a trip to the States in June 2007 and we would love to spend some time with a 'local'. :-)
Our plan is to fly into Chicago then spend around three weeks traveling through Illinois, Iowa, South & North Dakota and Minnesota to see some of what we consider to be the real America.
I am 31, UK/NZ dual national and my girlfriend is 30 and 100% Danish. We are a cool, laid back couple who have traveled quite a bit and love meeting people from all over. We currently live and work in Copenhagen, Denmark.
If any of you good people at VT would be kind enough to offer a sofa/bed/whatever to crash on for a couple of nights we'd really appreciate it! Alternatively if you would like to catch up and swap some travel stories we'd be keen to meet you. Perhaps even arrange a little VT meet?
Drop me an email if interested?
I am new to this website :-) so it is making me a little nervous. I hope to be at the right place to ask the following question...
I could use some help / suggestions with planning of a road trip (about 7 days) from Iowa to Arizona. My parents from Europe will arrive in Iowa sometime in March and plan on renting a car there. They would like to spend one week driving from Des Moines, IA to Phoenix, AZ. During their journey they would like to visit and see as many interesting places as possible - museums, parks, art, history, nature, .... anything interesting and unique to each state. Also, any advice as to where to stay (something more economical), during the 7 days on the road, would be much appreciated.
Hi everybody. I travelled through Iowa last year on a snowy December day and took this photo from the California Zephyr - does anybody know where it is?
Hello there Iowans!
I am a Minnesotan who is stir crazy and thinking of taking a weekend and driving down to Iowa for a mini-road trip to watch some Minor League baseball and have a few cold beers in the great outdoors.
Being from Minneapolis, all we have is DOMEBALL. As much as I love the Twins, I need to get away from the city and take in a game or 2.
Can anyone recommend the best atmosphere to watch a game from all the teams down in Iowa? I must confess I haven't been to Iowa for awhile so it would be nice to see anything else interesting while I'm there if anyone has any suggestions. Cities or small towns, I'm not particular, I'd just like to get away from the bustle of Minneapolis and indoor baseball :) Tell me what you think?
Any tips or suggestions for visiting this site?
My husband will be working for the media at the Iowa Caucus in January. I would like to know if it would be worth the trip for me to tag along. Where does it take place. What is there to do and see there? Thanks for any info.
Me and a few buddies are in the process of planning a cross country road trip and will probably be passing through Iowa en route to Denver. To be honest, I really only know of Des Doines and I was wondering what a bunch of early 20's guys from NY while spending a few nights in Iowa. Clubs, bars, etc, we're easy going. Any place that doesn't have a NY attitude will be a welcomed change. Also, what type of weather should we expect around mid January-early Feb? Thanks JP
Where should I go for Memorial Weekend? And why? I would love to go to both places but I can only go to one so which one should it be? Thanks.
We are planning to visit Sioux City in July for two weeks, looking for a fun family friendly place to stay- willing to stay in another area (no more than 45 minutes away from Orange City) and would consider cabin-camping at a state park. Need suggestions for day trips or a fun overnight trip nearby (fun for elementary kids).
