I'm planning my trip to Iceland in July, and I'd like to visit Jökulsárgljúfur National Park (and do short walks in Asbyrgi, Hólmatungur, Hljóðaklettar and visit Dettifoss).
I'm very confused with the information about the roads in the area. Many information seem to be 'outdated', mentioning only two roads in the park: 864 road on the right of the canyon (2WD passable), and 862/F862 road on the left, which isn't suitable for 2WD south of Dettiffoss.
Then I've read that a new road has opened in 2011, which connects road 1 to Dettiffoss.
My question is: does that mean that a regular car can now go all the way from Road 1 to Asbyrgi on the left of the canyon (using the new road to Dettifoss and continuing on road 862 to Asbyrgi), or regular cars still have to use road 864 to drive from road 1 to Asbyrgi? In other words, does the new road end at Dettifoss, or it connects to road 862?
Has anyone done this left-of-the canyon route recently in a regular car?
Thanks a lot!
