Need tips on traveling across Haute-Normandie  (12 Answers)

In mid March 2012 my husband and I wil lbe visiting in Normandy. We are staying in Les Connelles. However, I need travel tips for getting there as well as picking up a car/driving etc. Anything you can tell me. We plan on traveling from Paris-to Les Connelles with visiting Rouen, Les Andelys and of course the Chateau Gaillaird. Our main trip away from area is to St Mere Eglise where we will be spending two days at the Normandy Beaches and studying WWII history. I have never driven in a foreign country let alone France - where would be best to pick up a car etc.? Any airline suggestions? Any advice at all would be helpful. THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH

Public transport in Normandy area  (3 Answers)

Hello, 3 mature ladies (good walkers) interested in WW1/2 sites have 3-4 nights to visit these areas. Thought we could stay in Bayeux - will check out websites for accomodation suggested on other replies. Problem is we have no transport - happy to hire bikes - my question is how accessible will it be to visit these sites. Very flexible so any suggestions will be gratefully accepted - don't have to stay in Bayeux. Wow fabulous info on this site!!! thank you thank you.

Family Friendly accomodation and attractions in Normandy  (3 Answers)

Hi everyone, we are travelling with grandparents and two small children (1 and 3) to the Normandy region in May. My Dad is very keen on anything on world war related so this is a treat for him. Just researching possible accomodation options. Can anyone recommend any self catering/B&B's which are nice but won't break the budget and suitable for young children. We will have our own transport so there needs to be parking. Also recommendations on attractions in the area that are kid friendly would be much appreciated. I personally would love to walk around museums all day but I am thinking the kids will not!! Any advice would be great. Thanks :-)

Suggested route

Hi all,

We are travelling down from Calais to Domfront on 23rd Dec and would like suggestions of possible route/stop offs along the way.
We stayed near Amiens in October and preferred to keep off the autoroute as much as possible and pass through smaller towns.
I know it will take longer this way but we have all day to get down to Domfront and would like stop every so often for lunch , coffee etc
Thanks
Alison

Good accomodation in Normandy... budget!  (11 Answers)

Good day to you all
I'm planning to spend about 6-7 days travelling around Normandy visiting ALL the main D-Day sites (or as many as i can possibly manage) and i'm wondering several things, which of sure all you good folk will be able to assist me with.
Is 6-7 too little, too much or just enough time to see all the main stuff like the beaches, emplacements, relevant towns, museums, monuments, memorials etc?

I'm thinking of basing myself in 1-2 different places during my stay (and exploring the regions from there), i think Caen for the first part of it. But i'm not sure where to go for the second part, somewhere around the Sainte Mere-Eglise/Carentan area maybe? Any suggestions?

To escape the military history briefly during the trip i'm going to visit Honfleur and Mont San Michel at the start and end of the trip. Do these places deserve an overnight stay or is a stop off for a few hours in each enough?

I'm planning to drive from place to place so as regards accomodation, a car parking space is a must. That leads us to whether any of you guys can recommend good budget accomodation in places like Caen, Bayeaux, Carentan, Arromanches etc? I know France is not the cheapest of places but i'd prefer to stay in a good hostel, B&B or guesthouse than in a hotel. Am i being a bit ambitious here?

My thanks in advance for all your help
Regards to all!
DG

Sky Sports

I'm travelling from Boulogne-sur-Mer to a village just South of Caen at the end of this month. The problem is that is also the same day as the Rugby Union Premiership Final which I would really like to watch.

Does anyone know of a bar or restaurant anywhere in the area which subscibes to the UK Sky Sports Channels?

Normandie versus Bretagne  (4 Answers)

I have an ambitious 2 week plan to visit Normandy and Brittany. My impression is that Brittany has much more to offer and thought to concentrate my attention only on 2 things in Normandy : Le Mont St-Michel and Rouen. I am not interested in WW2 and hope that the coastal area of Brittany to be at least as interesting as the northern coast of Normandy. Did anybody visit both these areas ? I would be quite interested to hear your opinions. Thank you.

nice town for overnight stay?  (1 Answer)

Dear VTers,

We are driving up from Spain and want to stay in a nice french town about 2 - 2.5 hrs away from Calais (getting channeltunnel next morning) where we can stop for the night for a nice meal and hotel. As we're coming from Bordeaux, anything west of Paris will be suitable. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated as i dont know the area at all.

Many thanks

David

Flea Markets in the Normandy area?  (2 Answers)

Hello! We'll be in Normandie from 2nd to 16th Sept and I'd love to have a good rummage round some flea markets. Does anyone know of any in the area? We're driving, so distance isn't too much of a problem, within reason!

Thank you!

Seeking chill beaches for mid-late July  (2 Answers)

My partner and I will be in the Normandy area for about three days in mid-late July, and are looking for a nice beach to hang out and do very little at. We have absolutely zero interest in war memorials, but are interested in doing some side trips to other sites of cultural interest. We'd prefer to avoid the more expensive spots, and to have the option of camping somewhere nearby.

Any suggestions?

Strategic position  (3 Answers)

Hi everyone,
I'll be in Normandie the 3rd week of July, I'll have my own car available for the holiday. Can anyone suggest me which are the more strategic places for the accommodation? I would like to easily reach: Rouen, Eu, Dieppe, Etretat, Fecamp, Honfleur, Deauville, Trouville Sur Mer, Caen, Bayeux. I was thinking about Honfleur as "barycentric" departure point. What do you think? Do you suggest me some other places that I can't miss?
Any suggestion will be appreciated!
Thank you very much in advance!
Cheers
Virtualnick

Where to go and stay? Normandy  (3 Answers)

Hello,

My bf and I are doing a tour of France and want to check out some of the historical sights of Normandy.

We're not sure where abouts to stay and if there are any bus tours or day trips available from Paris.

We are most interested in Rouen and some of teh D Day sites. We are under a time crunch a little so we can't really dedicate more than 2 days to the area.

What do you suggest we do and where can we find a comprehensive tour of the region.

Reccomend a town or Village

My family and I had our first Holiday if France this year and are looking to go again next year. By far the cheapest ferry crossing with our car was to Calais, however we stayed near Dinard and so had a 5 hour road journey (on top of the 5 hours it took us to get to Dover from manchester).
The countryside and scenery where we stayed was fantastic bu were wondwring if any one new of areas nearer to Calais (maybe 2-3 hrs drive) that would equal the beauty of Brittany.
Idealy a nearby beach would be good, but as we will have our car with us we could make a beach trip a "day out" and travel maybe an hour for where we choose to stay.
We prefer rural locations.
Thanks in advance for your help

Kind Regards
The Hallam Family

France in December  (12 Answers)

We are planning a trip to Paris in December. We also want to go to the Normandy area to the D-Day Beaches. Q: I'm having a hard time doing the searching for information on the area. What are the names of the city/cities? Can someone help get me started? I don't need the history of June 1944. I'm looking for the time it takes to see the beaches, cemetaries, maybe a take a guided tour, or should I drive, take the train, etc. Someone please help! Thanks, Vanessa
