Hi, which one do you think has better nightlife? Cancun or Playa del Carmen?
I'm looking to rent a place in Progreso, Mexico on or near the beach, for 5 months next winter -November 2013 to March 31st, 2014. I hope to get a place for aprx.600.monthly, considering it is a long-term rental.(preferably with wifi) If anyone knows where to go to start searching please contact me. Thanks for any help.
My friend and I will be in the Yucatan for 2 weeks in March/ April.
The rough route we have so far:
Cancun - Chichen Itza - Merida - Campeche - Palenque - San Cristobal - then back towards Cancun staying at either Playa del Carmen or Isla Mujeres. (We know we will probably have to cut something out to fit if into 2 weeks but this is just a rough idea)
Can anyone suggest a good final place to stay near Cancun that has good beaches? Also if you have any advice on the rest if the itinerary feel free to comment!
Thanks in advance.
It's been awhile since I posted on here, but I have a few questions!
I'll fly into Cancun on June 29th and will leave on July 9th. I plan on renting a car from the airport, so I have a few questions:
- Has anyone does this that can recommend it?
- Would it be better to buy a map here or in Cancun? All the maps I see on Amazon are kind of old, and the newest one is from 2008.
- I've rented a car in advance from Budget for a total of like78. This does not include insurance. I plan on buying ALL the insurance I can. Can anyone give a rough estimate of how much they spent on car rental?
- Any tips on driving? I've driven in LA and in NYC, so I figure Mexico can't be so bad, but I'm still nervous!
Thanks in advance!!
We are visiting Mexico from Canada, what is the best currency to use there ? Mexican pesos or American ?
HI - I have the opportunity for a cheap simple rental in Progreso for a month but I am wondering what there is to do, I am afraid of getting bored! has anyone spent time there? has it become really touristy, invaded by the cruise ships, or does an authentic feeling still persist? Thank you, Jean
I am looking for information on Campeche. My boyfriend will be fishing there for four days and I am wondering if I can amuse myself during that time. Also, are there any yoga studios there? Thanks.
I am planning a trip in January with several female friends. We plan to fly into Cancun and drive first to Valladolid and then up to El Cuyo. One of my friends was warned by a travel agent that the area is "very dangerous" "don't leave the Cancun area!" I have driven fairly extensively around the Yucatan as far south as Xcalak and have always felt safe, but I haven't been north and it has been about 18 months or so since I've been to Mexico at all. Have things changed? Do I need to change my travel plans? I am taking several women with me who are not very experienced Latin American/rustic travelers and I need to be confident when I answer their concerns. Thanks.
Hi in two weeks I go to Mexico. We are planning on travelling by bus from Merida to Chitzen Itza, then Chitzen to Tulum, and Tulum to Playa Del Carmen. I was advised to book bus tickets in advance on the Ticket Bus website but it doesn't work very well from outside Mexico - half the time it says there are no buses available, and then when you do find a bus, it throws you out of the website just after i try to enter payment information. So, my question is does anyone have any ideas on whether it's necessary to book buses in advance or can we just turn up and get on a bus? I don't want to be waiting around all day for an available bus as our time is short.
Does anyone know if the dotted "track" noted on maps of the Yucatan between Las Coloradas and El Cuyo denote some kind of road connecting the two? I have traveled about 12 miles on this sand track before heading back to Las Coloradas. Don't want to repeat the trip if the sand "road" degrades into a walking path
My wife and I will be driving from Cancun to Xaclak area from 14 Dec to 28 Dec and I have read it is very crowded with locals on vacation at that time.
I have not had problems when I look to book rooms but it is only mid-September now and I am wondering how difficult it will become as December approaches.
We like to see a place before we buy it and we are driving so structured itinerary is unheard of for us.
Do you think we will have difficulty in just popping into towns and getting decent rooms in the 75 to 100 US$ range?
April 2010 go, June return.
I'm thinking of renting a car and seeing the Yucatan but I'd like to stay for maybe 3 days on Holbox and since there aren't any cars on Holbox, I was wondering how safe the parking lot in Chiquila is? Or if it's better to take the bus from Cancun and a rent a car once we've left Holbox? Thanks!
Is there a place in this hotel where I can purchase beach toys for a child? It would be so much easier than taking them along. Thx!
I am thinking about renting a small car for part of time I've be visiting the Yucatan area of Mexico. I'm planning on getting it at the Cancun airport but will use it to visit and stay in areas outside of Cancun. I will return the car a few days before ending the trip in Cancun.
Has anyone had experience renting a car in Mexico, especially in the Yucatan area? Any advice?
Dear Forum: I am planning to visit Mexico, Cancun area this year in Aug with my family 5 (children ages 2, 4, 7). Which area of the following would your recommend we stay if you had to choose. These are the areas available through my timeshare. Best beaches, family activities and safety will be top on our list of priorities. Any other advice on these areas will be welcome:
Cozumel, Isla Mujeres, Kantenah, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Aventuras, Puerto Morelos or Riviera Maya
Thanks in advance
I have a US drivers license. Will this work to rent a car and drive in the Yucatan?
Has anyone experienced the Wayak shuttle services? They have several routes in the Yucatan from Merida, Chichen Itza, Tulum, etc. They offer hotel pickup and you can avoid bus terminals and extra taxi fees. More expensive than buses, but very tempting. I would like to hear from anyone who has used them.
I will be staying at the Catalonia Yucatan Beach resort.
I would like to rent a car to vist the ruins in the area and not be dependant on taxi or buses and I don't want to pay the outlandish prices for the trips from the resort.
Can anyone suggest where the closes car rental place would be?
Family of four with backpacks going to Yucatun Peninsila for 2 weeks. Would prefer to take bus, etc. but a lot of posts recommend renting a car(?). Went to Cuba last year - basically got around by negotiating with private drivers to drive us to certain destinations. Had a blast!
Are there similarities in Mexico? Any advice vis-a-vis car rentals, buses, or otherwise?
Are there any open-air parties planned for New Year celebrations. If yes, where? Anything planned in Cancun or Playa de Carmen?
We have Verizon cell phones, so asked them about coverage in Mexico. Since we plan to be there about 5 weeks, they advised us it would be much cheaper to buy a by-the-minute phone once we arrived in Mexico. My question is: has anyone done this? Do you have any recommendations on whether to buy in Cancun or Merida or does it matter, pricewise? Are there different services to choose from, and who is better?
We plan to fly to Cancun, just because it's a cheaper flight. We'll probably spend the night. That reminds me of another topic ... how far from the airport is Cancun? Should we stay in Cancun or is there someplace closer to the airport to stay?
We want to explore the north coast ... is that what it's called? The beach towns around Progresso, in both directions. We're particularly interested in Telchac Puerto and Chicxulub. We'll spend some time in Merida too. Is it cheaper to rent a car in Cancun or Merida? We're not keeping it the full time we're there. We want to find a nice place to stay, at which point we'd turn in the rental.
We've been to the Yucatan before, but never rented a car. We've always relied on busses, so we're looking forward to the freedom of exploring on our own time. Thanx for any advice.
Hi there. I'm looking to travel after Christmas into the new year. Just read an article about Progreso and am now looking at renting a house there for two weeks. I have two pre-teen children who love playing in the ocean. Are there any worries about riptides or other ocean dangers? And what is the weather usually like there at that time. Any advice is welcome. I've been north of Tulum, but it was May and stayed at an all-inclusive. Not excited about doing that again.
I would like to get from Cancun to Chetumal (going on to Belize) in late December with my spouse and teenage kids (16 and 14 years). Is the best way to do this by bus? Where is the terminal in Cancun and can reservations be made? If so, how? Anyone know the cost?
I found a travel service called mayasites.com and am wondering if anyone has any experience with it? I can't find any reviews on it and would like to know a bit more before going forward.
I am planning a trip to the Yucatan for 2 people in December 2008, I am flexible on the exact dates. I am trying to decide if I should find a tour/travel agent to book everything with or try and do it all myself. My husband is disabled so need private drivers/transfers and no organized tours. We have travelled in Peru using local guides and such but booked the arrangements here before we left so was less stressful and easier to manage as we traveled around. I will be flying into Cancun but am not interested in spending any time there would like to arrange for transfer directly from airport to Chitzen Itza. Would like to spend aprox 5 nights at Chitzen Itza visiting that site over a couple days, Ek Balam, Merida, any other Maya sites close by, etc. I would then like to arrange a private transfer to Uxmal and spend aprox 5 nights there visiting Uxmal, the Puuc Route, etc. After that would like a private transfer down to Tulum to spend a few nights there so we can do the Tulum site and Coba before returning to Cancun to fly out. I am looking at an aprox 2 week time period to do all this in but want "home bases" to stay at so am not moving to different hotels every day. Does anyone have any experience with travel companies in the Yucatan that they can reccomend? Doing an organized "herd" tour in a group is just not feasible but have traveled many places doing private guides, drivers etc with good results. Any suggestions would be extremely welcome and thank you for your time.
We are traveling to Cancun in August and would like to visit Coba and Pac Chen. Do we need to sign up for a tour in order to visit Pac Chen or can we visit on our own? We will be renting a car so we will have transportation. I will appreciate any information and tips you can provide. Thank you
I've got 2 weeks off at the end of march and i'm trying to plan a last minute trip for myself. I've never been to the caribbean side of mexico and wondering if anyone can suggest the right place/s to go? I'm definately on a tight budget but i found a ticket to cancun for 600 bucks so i thought i could fly in and stay at some cheapy hotels somewhere. i have no desire for cancun and would rather something smaller. I would still like to be able to meet some people so not too small. Is tulum a good place to go for a few days? should i do playa del carmen? I want to explore the ruins as well and snorkel. any suggestions at all is great. thanks!
1. Is bus service available between Merida and Uxmal? Is 1-day tour to Uxmal from Merida enough?
2. Any bus from Valladolid to Cancun?
3. How about safety of above areas comparing to Mexico city?
Thank you for your answers.
Due to a job-related change I'm thinking about spending my remaining days of vacation in Yucatan. I'd like to stay in a sea ressort for relaxing but also partying for one week and to combine my visit with a round trip.
My problem is, that I am in a hurry, because the only possibility for me to make this journey is in the time from 8th of March till 30th of March (I am thinking about a two-week journey).
I already contacted local (=Austrian) travel agencies and it is hard to find a fitting offer due to the short time in advance. They offered me Hotel "Iberostar Paraiso del Mar" in Riviera Maya (all-inclusive) for one week combined with a one-week guided bus tour. The price is almost 3.000 EUR, so very expensive imho.
So I need you help, please answer quickly, because time is quickly running out:
-Do you kow any offerors for one-week round-trips, where only the hotels (and a hire car) is booked? (To feel more assured I'd prefer to book it online in advance...)
-Do you know cheap offers for hotels in Cancun (almost all hotels offered by Austrian and German offerors are fully booked due to Easter holidays)?
-Are there budget airlines (like Ryan air) from the U.S.? (probably I can manage to get a cheap flight to the states and fly to Cancun from there). Where would I be able to book them?
-Is Belize (Xunantunich) and Guatemala (Tikal, Flores) worth the detour and the problems occuring due to the impossibility to use rented cars outside of Mexico?
-Do you know the mentioned above hotel in Riviera Maya?
Thank you in advance!
