shortcut from Comitan to Frontera Corosal

Is there a back way to get from Comitan to Frontera Corozal without having to take HWY 199 ? It looks like there may be some villages near the border like Monte flor and Flor de Cacao, any recommendations?

Travel from Guatemala City to San Cristobal  (1 Answer)

Is there a way to get from Guatemala City to Chiapas, particularly San Cristobal without flying through Mexico City or without taking a chicken bus? A good bus would be fine or a van driver. Appreciate the info.

2 weeks in Chiapas? is that too long?  (5 Answers)

I am planning a 2 weeks vacation and considering Chiapas, but I want to make sure there is enough to do there for 2 weeks. Is it too much time? I've already been to Oaxaca twice so not considering including that. What would be a reasonable itinerary in Chiapas if you had 2 weeks?

Chiapas trip, questions and looking for any feedback!  (6 Answers)

Hello!
Traveling to Chiapas in May for (only!) 5 days. Here's our plan (so far):
Day 1: arrive Tuxtla Gutierrez, travel to San Cristobal de Las Casas
Day 2: Travel by bus to Palenque
Day 3: Palenque OR Bonampak
Day 4: Palenque OR Bonampak
Day 5: depart Villahermosa

Any suggestions for changes? We are arriving in Tuxtla G. and departing from Villahermosa.
How long should we plan to see Palenque ruins?
Should we visit Yaxchilan instead of Bonampak?
Suggestions for places to stay in San Cristobal and Palenque (looking for nice hostels)?
We will be traveling by bus, should we book tickets ahead of time or can we book them once we are there?
Have never been in that area of Mexico, lonely planet says the highways down there can be trouble, any truth?

Lots of questions! Thanks for any help!!
Lauren

San Christobal de las Casas to Palenque visiting the ruins  (1 Answer)

Are there good tours to Palenque leaving from SCC visiting the waterfalls (Agua Azul, Misol-Ha) and the ruins (very) early in the morning (so I can use the tour also as transportation)?
Or a good tour leaving Palenque visiting the ruins (very) early and then via the waterfalls (Agua Azul, Misol-Ha) or other attractions back to SCC?
Anyway I want to be at the ruins as the entrance opens (read 8 AM), so if not by a tour I will do this by myself.
Good options to stay, El Panchan or Palenque?

Thanks answering,

Harry.

Transportation and Safety  (3 Answers)

A friend and I want to go to the Yucatan area for a week in December, to fly into Cancun, then to see particularly the Chiapas area.

1. is it a good idea to rent a truck/4x4 and drive it ourselves, or should we take buses/public transportation? We are concerned about not having much time, and having to wait on the schedules of public transportation. If we do rent a vehicle, are there indeed terrible penalties for accidents?

2. What are the safety issues we should be aware of when travelling through Mexico, and in particular the Chiapas region, as we are foreigners with very little Sapnish between us?

Thanks!

Where is the bus terminal (central camionera) located in Ciudad Cuauhtemoc?  (1 Answer)

I'm planning to go to Palenque from Ciudad Cuauhtemoc and I need to know where the bus terminal is located.

Do they have buses from Ciudad Cuauhtemoc directly to Palenque or do I need to go San Cristobal first?

I've been checking around and I can't find any information about buses running from Ciudad Cuauhtemoc to Palenque.

Thanks a lot, Tomas.

Is mid December a good time to visit palenque? Weather wise and finding accomodations in the near by hotels.

Do you think is better to stay in palenque town or rent one of those cabanas out side of palenque?

Is palenque crowder or quieter in mid December?

Please let me know; Thanks, Tomas.

Renting a car or ride on public transportation while visiting palenque and Villahermosa.  (2 Answers)

Can I rely on public transportation to visit palenque and Villahermosa or do you think I need to rent a car?

I heard that rentin a car is a hassle in Mexico regardless of which part you are going to visit; so I'm not sure about renting a car. What do you suggest.

Thank you, Tomas.

Bus from Ciudad Cuauhtemoc, Chiapas (Guatemalan Border) to San Cristobal or Tuxtla Gutierrez  (1 Answer)

In mid-December I will cross the border from La Mesilla (Huehuetenango, Guatemala) to Ciudad Cuauthtemoc in Chiapas. I'd like to catch a bus to Tuxtla Gutierrez. Can you tell me how long it might take to cross the border, and how difficult it is to catch a bus to Tuxtla? Where to go once I've crossed the border? Costs? Schedules? Thanks very much for any information you may be able to provide! - Rick

TS / Hurricane Stan

Is it possible to go to these places in Chiapas due to the recent storm/hurricane and all the rain:
- San Cristobal de Las Casas (night bus from Merida, is the road ok?)
- Villages around San Cristobal
- Ocosingo, Tonina (from SCDC)
- Palenque (Road from Ocosingo)
- Yaxchilan, Bonampak, Lacandon Jungle (two day tour from Palenque)

Concerning Yaxchilan, the access is by river.. is it safe, or too much water? Are people going there these days?

Thanks for all info on the situation..

Yucatan & Chiapas - are SLEEPING BAG and MOSQUITO NET necessary?  (3 Answers)

Hi again,
I have one more thing to ask: Will I need a sleeping bag (+mat) and mosquito net under the following circumstances?:
2 weeks in Yucatan & Chiapas, sleeping in hostels/cabaƱas/maybe hammocks in some hostels in the jungle, would like to take a trip (with a guide) to the jungle south of Palenque (Yaxchilan), maybe a hike up a volcano Chichonal, if possible. Have all necessary vaccinations + malaria pills.
... I am asking because I am not sure how equipped the hostels are and if a guide provides any gear. In Pucallpa in the Peruvian jungle I went for a 4-day trip with a local guide and he had nets and all - but that is Peru.

Any ideas or experiences? Muchas gracias a todos.

Is there a B&B type accommodation in Mexico?  (3 Answers)

Hi,
I will be traipsing around Chiapas, Oaxaca and Yucatan peninsula with my partner for 2 weeks in the second half of May. I am trying to get an idea (on the internet) about the type of accommodation available in smaller towns and villages in the region, but I am finding only hotels or hostels.

I would like to ask if anyone knows of more local, small places. Last year I traveled for a month in Peru and in some towns I encountered "hospedaje familiar", basically a private home where the local people were renting one or two rooms to visitors. Something like B&B in the US, but more basic. I liked the fact, that I had a chance to talk to the owners (locals) and see how people live - all in a friendly, informal setting. Does anything like that exist in Mexico? This is my first trip there and I am trying to get the sense of the culture and customs.
Big thanks for any insider's view!

Ciudad del Carmen accommodation's

Any suggestions on middle of the road (price wise) accommodation's in or around Ciudad del Carmen area. In last years drive down from States we overnited at Holiday Inn in town, their rate of 109$ US, was a bit much . I have done a Internet search for accommodations but the two that come up are Holiday Inn & Fiste Inn both in same price range.
