Planning a drive from Tucson to Cabo San Lucas  (1 Answer)

Hi All:

Could somebody suggest a set of maps and books that would help in our drive from Tucson to CSL? I have seen reference to the book "The Magnificent Peninsula" which seems to be well received. However, it appears the last edition was in 2001. Is this still worth getting used?

Also, are the National Geographic Maps of Baja Norte and Sur decent or are there others to get?

Finally, if anybody has a GPS, are there GPS maps for Baja? We have Tom-Tom and Street Atlas for GPS units.

Thanks for your input!

P.

20th Anniversary: 1st Time in Baja: 5 Star Suggestions?  (3 Answers)

I'm trying to surprise my wife with a first trip to Baja for our 20th anniversary in late October. Having never been to Baja before (we have been to the Yucatan several times), I need some serious help in picking a spectacular yet intimate adults resort in the right location.

Ideally I thinking about the all-inclusive route so we have nothing to worry about and can just relax. However, if the resort is right next to a town where we can get both quick meals on the run and fancier meals too, we'd consider that.

I'd like to find a resort that is both spectacular in terms of location, scenery, accommodations, service (and food if all-inclusive). I won't say that money is no object, but a 20th only comes around once so I'm very willing to splurge big-time on a 5 star resort.

As mentioned, we'd prefer a place with either no kids or very few. We also don't want a large resort with hundreds of rooms, a disco, a theater, planned daily activities etc. I hope to spend our days at the beach reading and walking with mellow evenings watching the sunset.

We would like to get some local flavor, hopefully do some great snorkeling (or perhaps get certified for diving). We may consider renting a car or a jeep and going for some day hikes or heading up to the mountains for a serious hike.

I also have no idea which town(s) we should be looking at. We're definitely not interested in cruising bars, concrete and being gringo tourists. We'd probably enjoy a smaller town with some real local flavor. If we do rent a car, we wouldn't mind being a bit out of the way either.

Thanks for your suggestions. I'm a guy trying to make his wife VERY happy for our 20th. I'd like to make it extremely special and something we'll never forget. Gracias!

Budget traveller in Baja...........

Hi there,
This would be my first time in Mexico.
And I am planning to go to Baja, especially for the Beaches and Marine Mammals.
I want to know how easy it is to get in the islands around La Paz by myself, as I never get tours when travelling, do it by myself only!!! using local transports.
I mean how easy? Can I get a water taxi to get into the others islands, and also what about the accommodations, do they have camping or cheap bungalows by the beaches?
Any tips is more that welcome!
Thank you

Cabanas in Baja California Sur

Hi

I am looking for somewhere in Baja California or Pacific Northwest to go for either New Year or for a few days after the New Year. Ideally I want to stay in a cabana on a beach but as I am probably travelling alone I want somewhere tranquil but with nice 'safe' chatty people around (possibly a bit more backpacker than glam!) I am looking for thinking space so anywhere beautiful with beaches and scenery would be wonderful.

Can anyone help??

Many thanks from someone who just needs to get away! :)

Tours and Day Trips

We will be in San Jose del Cabo at the end of May. I got an excellent brochure from a tour company with enough day trips to keep us busy the whole week. I could not see any postings of comments about one tour over the other, except the interesting post about the boat not makeing it back to port.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Mexican Coffee recipe from "Beer and Art"  (1 Answer)

Happened upon this roadside bar/resturant last year on way to Todo Santos. Had a great coffee but forgot the ingredients that the owner shared. Do recall there were at least five licors including Guaycura licor de Damiana.

Does anyone know them?

Driving in Baja  (8 Answers)

My friend and I are looking at taking a vacation in southern Baja in January that would entail us spending about a week in Todos Santos, then another week in Loreto. Looking at the flights in and out of the two towns, it seems that Loreto is sort of a "can't get there from here" kind of place, where as Los Cabos is quite well served by multiple airlines. It seems like a much more feasible proposition to fly in and out of Los Cabos rather than trying to fly to/from Loreto.

My issue: if I were going to be in the US or another developed country, I wouldn't think twice about renting a car to drive the approximately 350 km between the two cities so that we could fly in and out of Los Cabos. But:

--I have never been to Baja (or Mexico for that matter)
--My Spanish speaking skills are weak
--I had, shall we say, a "character-building experience" renting a car earlier this year in Costa Rica to drive an even shorter distance
--I'm not sure what the road situation is like after the hurricanes a few months ago.

Given all this, what do VTers knowledgeable about the area recommend? Are the roads decent in this area? Can I rent a 4WD, and should I? How long should I expect this drive to take? Any other suggestions?

Baja California for 3 Weeks in April  (2 Answers)

Hi

My girlfirend and I are planning a 3 week trip to Mexico at the start of April. We will be flying into Mexico city from Dublin, Ireland.

We are going to spend time in Baja California but not just to sit on the beach for 3 weeks. We enjoy nice, quiet, laid back beaches (and people!), looking at wildlife, good food and discovering the local culture. Can anyone suggest some possible destinations and maybe an itenerary that might fit in with what we like to do?

For instance, would the South or North of the baja suit us better? Whats the cheapest flight to get there from Mexico City? Whats the weather like at that time and will we need to pre-book budget accomodation in advance.

Thanks a billion!

Richie

I will be almost six months pregnant in April when I visit Cabo San Lucas. Does anyone have any suggestions on things to see or do? Shopping and hanging out on the beach are great, but if anyone knows of any safe excursions please let me know.

Cost of food  (2 Answers)

I am wondering what the cost of the CHEAPEST of cheap food in Baja California Sur/Norte. Not restaurant meals, I am inquiring into the cost of the cheapest tacos and other such pre-made street food as well as rural food such as vegetables/milk powder/basic staples purchased in or around small towns, far from the big tourist resorts, like near San Ignacio or Catavina. Also do they sell large goat-skin (or otherwise similar) water bladders/carriers anywhere in Baja California and does anyone know the price and where? Thanks!

Suggestions?- Los Barrilles/La Paz etc.

We plan to be in Los Barrilles by Jan. 10; we will stay in the southern cape for a couple of weeks. We want to do some typical tourist things without losing sight of the more local colour. Any suggestions for achieving that balance.?
Thanks.

Security of our 'things'?  (1 Answer)

We will be driving down the Baja in January, heading first of all to a casita in Los Barrilles. We will be staying in hotels from Tijuana to La Paz and doing some sightseeing. What should our concerns be for the security of our luggage and golf clubs in our SUV and in our accommodations? Thanks.
