Dover

Dover to Southern Brittany

We will be coming off a NCL cruise ship in Dover and then want to travel to Quimper in Southern Brittany to get to a Keycamp site near Benodet. We assume the easiest way is to catch a ferry over to Calais and then catch a train from Calais. We are from New Zealand and haven't traveled round the UK or France before, so any advice would be appreciated.

You can get a ferry with either P&O

http://www.poferries.com/tourist/

or Seafrance: seafrance.com/seafrance/open...

From 12GBP one-way, takes around 75/90 minutes. It's worth booking in advance online, even as a foot passenger, just to make sure you get the ferry at the tiome you want (there are plenty of sailings per day).

www.sncf.com will give you times and fares for the onward rail journey.

However:

You cannot get a direct train from Calais to Quimper (according to SNCF): you have to go into Paris and change. This is quite a lengthy process (because of the connnections, and because Paris>Quimper takes 4 hours) and involves changing stations in Paris itself.

Therefore you might consider taking the train all the way to Paris from either London St Pancras or, possibly, Ebbsfleet or Ashford it the train connections from Dover work well (see nationalrail site linked below). You will then have to change stations for the train to Quimper. The cheapest Eurostar options are booked well in advance (the 'window' is open 120 days before departure). www.eurostar.com

You might also consider purchasing the Paris>Quimper tickets online, to save youselves additional hassle.

You have both train and coach options from Dover to London: www.nationalrail.co.uk and www.nationalexpress.com for times and fares. Coach is cheaper but takes longer.

I'm assuming you won't be making this journey before next Spring at the earliest. Times and fares for those dates will not yet be in the relevant databases, but neither are likely to change much so you can draw up your basic plans.
