Suggestion on a good private tourguide  (4 Answers)

Hi, I am visiting BA 12/24 - 12/28 with my wife. I want to make sure I catch the local sites I would not be able to quickly see or figure out on my own while I am there. If anyone can suggest a good and not overly expensive private tour guide, I would be grateful.

Thanks,

Jonathan

Much needed advice!  (1 Answer)

I posted this as a reply on another post, but I thought I'd open it up...because I need all the advice I can get!
I have two options of apartments. One, is in Barrio Norte with an Argentinean girl who works and goes to school, then other is in Palermo Soho with an American girl (like me) who I don't know, but met briefly through mutual friends.
I'm not going to school (just graduated college). I already speak Spanish fluently, and will be doing a internship in a political office.
I honestly feel more comfortable living with the American girl, just because I know we have the same interests, but at the same time, I don't want to miss out on the natives. Do you think I'll be able to meet enough natives through working? I can't decide! Any advice?

Any good walking tour in Buenos Aires?

I just landed in Buenos Aires a couple of days ago and heard about some walking tours around the city but I can´t seem to find them. Anyone know where they leave from, or any other fun option for someone who simply wants to walk around and get to know Buenos Aires? I am not too fond of bustours.

Happy New Year everyone!!

Christmas Help!  (2 Answers)

This is to all the porteños that read this, but I write in English as to not offend others who might read it.

I need help! For a Christmas gift to my uncle, I would like to make a donation to a Fundacion that I found in BS AS. It is called Fundacion Margarita Barrientos. I have been in contact with them, as I plan to use Disco Super Market's online purchasing program to make a delivery of groceries. Before I spend money on stuff that they don't need, I was wondering if anyone would be willing to call them to ask if there are specific products, (that way I dont have to make the international phone call). I realize that maybe noone will answer the phone because of it being the 24th, but would someone in BS AS be willing to try for me? The number is 4919-1333.

Mil gracias for anyone who can help me out. And Feliz Navidad tambien.
Saludos- Emily

Questions about tipping in restaurants, cafes, and bars...  (4 Answers)

Okay so each guidebook appears to slightly differ on their advice with tipping. I am not sure if that is because tipping has changed over the past 5 years or for other reasons.
I am confused on what "cuberito" is on a restaurant bill?
Is 10% the minimum or norm?
Is the tip ever included in the bill and if so, under what wording would that be?
If I order just a cafe con leche for3.50 do I litteraly just leave a tip or just 35 centavos or so?
If the service is not so great (waiter is difficult to track down, I received something other than what I asked for, they forget to bring me something I ordered, etc.) is it alright to not tip or not as much or, like the USA, do you just tip them anyways?
Besides self-serve places like McDonalds, are any eateries not appropriate to tip at?

While I'm asking, do bartenders also normally get a 10% tip based on drink price? Also, if I walk into a bar with my friend and she sits down because she wants to eat but I just want a mixed drink, do I order it from the bartender or waiter before joining her at the table? If I order it from the bartender do I pay him immediately at the bar or wait to pay for the drink that will be included in the bill with the food?

Any other tips about tipping would be welcomed! =)

Thanks all!

How does food delivery work?  (2 Answers)

I have a feeling that while I am here in BA I will be using the delivery service now and then. Before I assume anything, I want to make sure how things work here:
If a restaurant/cafe delivers do they advertise that or should I ask? If so, what is that called in Spanish?
Do they just need an address or will they ask for my mobile number as well?
Is an importance for promptness given when ordering via delivery or is it more lax?
How much does delivery cost? What might a flyer say if delivery is free? Is there usually a minimum cost before delivery is free?
Whether the delivery is free or not, do I still tip the delivery person and if so, how much?
How do I know if I am in the "delivery zone" of a certain place?
And last of all, I assume you can only pay with cash when ordering delivery, correct?

Thanks everyone for the info! =) (I love this posting board, great advice!)

An ATM in BsAs that dispenses US dollars?  (6 Answers)

I need to pay for an apartment with US dollars. Do most ATMs in BsAs give the option to dispense currency in both Pesos and US dollars?
Also, here in the US there are some banks that are known for their low fees and perks such as free ATM withdraws. Are there such banks like that in BsAs - in other words, is there a certain bank that I should do my ATM withdraws from while living in BsAs?

Thanks everyone for the insight! =)

Restaurant Name???

Hi everyone-
I am trying to remember the name of a place I ate at this past summer(well winter in BS AS). It is in Plaza Serrano- and it is called Meridian Something- I think there is a number after it...they have some wooden tables outside of it- with big white cushions and the waiters wear all white. Can anyone help me out here? Thanks!

A VT meeting in early June.  (2 Answers)

Hey VTers. My group (4) will be in Buenos Aires end of May, and most of June. I'm noticing several others will be there at the same time, along with our gracious portenos. Do you think we have the makings of a VT meeting or at least a dinner?

Would love to meet the regulars to this forum!
