Good 'central' place to stay in Devon?  (13 Answers)

My partner and I are looking for a place to stay in Devon for around 10 days that is relatively 'central'. By this I mean we will be in the middle of a travel web North and South and on relatively good roads. We are considering Beer (because we prefer small, but not too small) and Exeter (because it seems central). We are wary of picking somewhere that looks accessible, but from which we will have to spend 30-45 minutes on tiny laneways just to get out / in. A year or so back we stayed in Falmouth in Cornall, which was exactly what we wanted - a good size with lots of pubs and restaurants, beautiful and a good choice of accommodation. It was also easy to get just about anywhere in Cornwall from there. We fell in love and are looking for similar in Devon. Any suggestions? Also, specifically, what are roads in and out of Beer like?

Thanks :).

where to stay  (14 Answers)

Hello, I am planning a trip to the UK and I am taking my 75 year old father back to meet up with his sister and husband. I would like to book a property that can sleep up to 8 people. My question is where is the best place to stay in Devon, it would be good if we could get somewhere close to shops, resturants and pubs so that they could take short walks. I have been looking but it is very confusing. There will be my aunt & Uncle..in there seventies, my father, my cousin, myself and partner in there 50's....any idea ? we plan to visit in September

thanks

Pests in SW England ( other than tourists )?  (10 Answers)

Probably a silly question but my wife and I would like to know if we need to pack insect repellent when we come to SW England in July? Do you have mosquitoes , sandflys or wasps? Alas I'm allergic and swell up a bit if bitten :(

South West England

My wife and I have 2 weeks in a rental car going round the south west starting and finishing in Southampton in July before joining the Celebrity Eclipse cruise into the Baltic.
We would like any tips on routes to take and recomended B&Bs / Farm Stays along the way. We want to avoid motorways as much as posible.
We realize July is peak season so if you know of places that wont be too crowded would be great!
Thanks

Moving to North or Mid Devon  (3 Answers)

I am thinking of moving to Tiverton area or possibly Barnstable. WHat is it like to live in this part of Devon? Are there plenty of jobs? What are the house prices like? Are the pubs & resturants any good? Do the tourists get in the way? Are there any good concert venues for rock bands? THsi is a big move for my family so I would love some honest views of peopel that live there or know the area well.
Thanks from an almost Brummie but deffiently landlocked!
Denise

oh my am I in trouble !!!!!  (3 Answers)

Unlike my moto I've left it till the last minute and I'm desperately trying to find a campsite in North Devon that will be able to accomodate my family an I, wk com 8th Aug. Although this is probably not the time to be shouting the odds, I have 3 boys aged 3-9 who are desperate to spend a week by a beach in our tent. We would also need an electrical hook up (for recharging the game-boys)and showers etc. I'd prefer not to go into one of those holiday parks but time is running out and it's starting to look grim. Please if you know of any sites that fit our criteria and have pitches available, let me know or it will be a week in my back garden in Birmingham which could cause serious marital problems and a few violent children.

sleeping on Cornwall/Devon beaches - legal & safe?  (3 Answers)

Hi,

I plan to visit Cornwall or Devon for a few days in August with a small group of friends. We are on a tight budget and are not considering hotels, cottages and accommodation like that.

Instead, we are wondering if it is safe and legal to sleep on the beaches at night? Has there been much problems with petty thieves or night attacks on beaches? Are tents allowed/necessary?

Hope to hear from anyone who had an open-air camping experience like this.

Many thanks!

Getting to Devon  (3 Answers)

My 8-year old son and I are coming to Devon in two weeks! We have a couple of questions:
1) We are staying in a place called Umberleigh, which is between Exeter and Darmoor. Is Exeter the closest place to rent a car? If so,
2) What is the best way to get from Heathrow to Exeter? We arrive very early in the morning on a Tuesday.
3) What is a good place to spend a night between Umberleigh and Porthleven?
Any help would be most appreciated!! Thank yoU!

I'm staying in the South Hams area (near Hope) for a week in June, and I'm bringing my dog. I know there are some dog-friendly beaches, but I'm interested to know whether dogs are generally welcomed in the area.... pubs, ferries, outdoor tourist attractions?

Any advice welcomed -- general or specific.

Thnaks.

Getting to and from Totnes to London  (5 Answers)

We are planning a trip to Totnes in mid-April. We plan to take the train from London to Totnes and back. Are we crazy to think we can do this on a Sunday evening?

Where is the best place to book train tickets online?

Also, where can we rent/hire a car in Totnes? Or should we go to Torquay for the car instead?

Thanks in advance, Barb
