Departamento de Guatemala

Addressing package to Guatemala

We have visited Guatemala twice and made some life long friends. We would love to send them gifts and have their address, but we don't know the proper way to address the package. They do not live in Guatemala City. They live in a smaller town of a smaller town of Chimaltenango. Would we put the municipal of both of the smaller towns on 2 different lines and then depto of Chimaltenango (and all their postal codes) and then Guatemala, C.A.?

Hi there, first of all you're not saying if you're planning on using regular mail or a courier like UPS, DHL or Fedex to send the package. FYI, the guatemalan postal system is being run by a canadian company www.elcorreo.com.gt
The normal way to write a postal address is no different than the way we do it here in the US. You would have to know the street or Avenue and house number and zip code (zona), town and departamento (state). I'm saying this because in countries like costa rica and nicaragua they still use a system like back in the colonial days using reference points.

So it should be something like this:
Sr. Fulano de Tal (John Doe)
5a Calle 4-12 zona 2
Parramos, Chimaltenango
Guatemala, Central America

You could send it certify return reciept requested or something like that. Just in case you need to trace it by contacting the correo via e-mail.
Good luck.
