We will be traveling to Peru in March. I can't seem to find the answers to the last few planning questions that I have. Hoping someone can help: We will stay in Ollyntaytambo for two nights and then do a day trip to Machu Picchu finishing in Cusco. So the plan is to depart Ollyntaytambo in the morning for Machu Picchu - visit MP - return to Cusco that same evening for two nights. This is where I am having difficult. Here are my questions:
1 - Any thoughts on Peru Rail versus Inca Rail? Is one better or more reliable than the other?
2 - Has anyone had difficulty actually booking on Peru Rail? I can select the specific departure that I want but after that the webpage will not load? I have tried three different computers on three different servers on three different days. Third time a charm?
3 - We will check out of our Ollyntaytambo hotel in the morning and am not sure what to do with the luggage. I am not sure I understand the luggage limits on the train or if there is storage at the Machu Picchu train station or in Machu Picchu. We may not return to Ollyntaytambo to pick up luggage but go direct to Cusco.
4 - It has been suggested to me that the train from MP to Cusco stops in Ollyntaytambo and that we may be able to store luggage there and pick up at the stop. I cannot find any evidence that it stops. Anyone done this route?
5 - It seems llike it might actually take less time to take the train from MP to Ollyntaytambo and then hire a van to Cusco. Anyone have experience with this?
Would love to hear any thoughts or suggestions that anyone has -
I would like to ask a few questions about my trip..
1. How is the weather in February in Cusco and MP?
2. I will be traveling with a suitcase, so I prefer to stay in Cusco and take a train to Aguas Calientes just for the day. Is it safe traveling back to Cusco during the night?
3. Will MP be crowded that period of time? I have to arrive early or not? How many hours I need to spend there?
If there is anyone traveling there the same period, pls contact! :)
I am currently in the process of planning an almost year-long stay near Cusco, volunteering at a children's school. There are so many facets to consider that I am slightly overwhelmed. I'm not sure if any of you can directly address my situation, but any advice would be helpful!
1) My first difficulty is purchasing tickets. I plan to leave September '12 and return August '13, but so far I have been unable to find a travel website that will book that far in advance. But, one-way tickets cost almost as much as round-trip tickets. Is there any way to get around this?
2) Also: I was told by the group I am working with that I should come in as a "tourist" and then apply for temporary residency afterwards, to stay longer than 3 months. Will customs flag this, especially if my return ticket is more than 3 months?
3) General question about Cuzco: I have been told to expect everything from extreme cold to burning heat, during my stay. Does anyone who has been to Cuzco in the hotter and cooler months have any recommendations/advice?
Thank you for your help!
does anyone know how long of a bus ride it is to get from La paz to Cusco? and how often the buses leave and from where? thank you!
Is anyone from the UK going to Cusco ? I went very recently and bought some playing cards with pictures of Machu Picchu on but unfortunately I spoilt them by spilling coffee on them and wondered if anyone could get me another set.
I am going to Peru next year, I land on August 22nd and i am there until Aug 28th, 2011. We wanted to visit Cusco, Machu Picchu, and Manu. I fly into Lima and was going to fly into Cusco from Lima. Should i do the tours? I saw a 2 day/ 1 night tour to Machu Picchu and I saw a 3 days tour to Manu. Or are these things we can go see on my own? Also is there anything good in Lima or should i stick to Cusco and Manu? Thanks to everyone for their help and advice
If I have asthma can I still go to machu pichu
I am about to book a trip to Machu Picchu and the Galapagos with a Peruvian company called has anyone travelled with them, or have any feed back about them? We are paying a rather large amount, and I just want to be sure that they will come through for us.
Thanks for you help.
I'd really like to be able to see Machu Pichu and the city of Cuzco on this current trip, but ive obviously heard about the landslides in the region and would like some advice.
Basically I think I will spend longer in Bolivia before going overland through Peru up to Ecuador, just wondering whether 3 weeks will be long enough for things to have improved, if not, what other parts of the country are good for ancient Inca finds?
I will be staying in Cusco for a bit before I hike the Inca Trail. Should I bring my own PowerBars, trail mix etc or can I buy all of that cheaply in Cusco?
I am taking the Vistadome train from Ollanta up to AC/MP for 2 nights, and have heard conflicting stories on luggage storage. Does anyone have any info on whether or not you can bring luggage on the train (and how much it costs if so), or if there are safe/secure storage lockers at Ollanta train station?
Aloha everyone, I'll be traveling to Cusco/AC/MP in August with my girlfriend. Our plan is to arrive in AC in the evening, get up early the next day at 5am to make the first bus and hike Huayna Picchu, enter MP and visit the ruins, exit to eat lunch/use the restroom (since I've read there are no facilities inside), then re-enter after lunch for a few more hours.
Does anyone know if the entrance fee is good for the entire day, or do I need to buy multiple tickets?
Thanks for your help, Ben
I'm thinking to travel to Colombia/Ecuador/Peru at the end of the year and beginning of next year, which is when I've got some free time.
Regarding visiting Peru and Machu Picchu in November and December, how is it?
Have you trekked around Machu Picchu at that time? I've read that it's the rainy season. I would like to hike to Macchu Pichu, but will it be too rainy to do so and have a great experience?
Please let me know your comments based on your experiences, especially if you've been to Macchu Pichu during November or December.
I am thinking about studying Spanish in Cusco for a few weeks. However, I am DEATHLY afraid of cockroaches, especially the big ones. Are there alot of them in Cusco? Do they fly?
I know it is a silly fear because they can't hurt me but for some reason they paralyze me with terror.
Gracias a todos!
At the start of May I'll be spending a few days in Lima, 4 days taking in Cusco and the sacred valley, then we head on on a 4 day incan trail hike. After we return from Machu Picchu we'll have 5 full days to play with.
What i'm looking to do is something a little off the tourist path( eg. hike out to little known/visited ruins) I looked at trekking to espiritu pampa but just don't have the time. Lake Titicaca seems to get varying reviews and the train schedule to Puno doesn't really fit into my schedule very well. Can anybody offer up any suggestions?
Thanks in advance
i am arriving in cusco on a saturday and staying until tuesday.i wish to take a train to machu picchu that monday.my question is,will the agency that sells the train tickets be open on the weekend?thanks!
is it uncommon to travel from cusco to Machu Picchu and back to cusco in one day? keep in mind that i am traveling by train.thankyou.
Is anyone familiar with this company? Is it reputable?
Thank you for any information,
I have some questions about Peru Rail. The "backpacker" option seems well priced and some friends and I were planning to take the train from Cuzco to Puno (Lake Titicaca) but then a friend didn't think the train was a good idea.
Can anyone tell me how safe the train is. Also, can you buy at the station or must you reserve ahead of time online. Does the train usually stick to the schedule listed on the site:
THANKS FOR ANY INFO!
So I've realized that the Inka Trek has sold out for June (unsurprisingly). So the 3 options I am currently looking at are:
I was wondering if anyone has done any of these treks, and which one you would recommend out of the 3? Of course, for the Choquequirao one I wouldn't be able to visit Machu Picchu, but I also heard that it's a lot less crowded.
Will appreciate any recommendations! :)
I'm wondering if anybody has stayed in Hostal Suecia II, in Cusco? I've tried calling them up to make a reservation, but somehow I can't seem to get in touch with them. I'm using Skypeout, and I'm not too sure if I'm dialling the number correctly.
Can someone please confirm their telephone number? What I'm trying to dial is +5184239757, as stated in the LP 2004 guide book.
For some reason, Skypeout keeps dialling +515184239757, which is obviously wrong. If their number is correct and still in service, then I know that something is probably wrong with my installation of skypeout.
Thanks in advance.
If I were to buy a round trip ticket from Cuzco to M.P..
Do I have to return the same day?
Or, can I stay overnight and take the train the next day?
We will be in Cusco for 9 weeks and will be doing the Inca Trail in wekk 8.
Are there any day walks in the hills and countryside around cusco that we can do. (NOT Sacred Valley as we will also go there on week-ends).
has anyone heard of this tour group or Hostel?
is there medical assistance while on the trail or a way to get help?
I am going to be with the Tour group Peru Gateway and am looking for people who are going to be in Cusco or Hiking around the first week of October. How is the weather on the trail that time of year is there anything that anyone can recommend to carry that they wernt told to bring and wish you would have brought.. How cold do the nights really get?>
I have heard that many times air flights are delayed or cancelled between Lima/Cusco due to fog. Is this true and does it happen often. We will be traveling in May. Are flights delayed for just a few hours or for days. Thank you for your help.
Does any know about the vaccinations I will need coming from the States to Peru- Cusco and Macchu Picchu? Has anyone heard of any complications from having vaccinations..... This whole trip is really scaring me because I am going alone and I am a young female... how bad do I have to worry about disease in October?
I am going to arrive in Cusco on October6 anyone going then as well. Also How much should I worry about the crime in cusco. I am really nervous about going. Can anyone help or will anyone be there then?
I would like to visit Machu Pichu in August because I´m already in Peru. Of course the Inka trail is fully booked.
Can anybody suggest or share any experience with trails that are somewhat similar and end up at Machu Pichu? Can you even recommend an agency?
If anybody wants to join on this trip please drop a note as well.
This is my first hike and I am going alone. I am 23 and rather petite. I have been atheltic all of my life and still work out, but not hard. I have been doing some reseach and the trek looks more difficult that I had imagined.. I have booked with Peru gateway and dont know much about them, does anyone? Also do some of the areas have narrow paths with extreme drop offs? Does anyone feel that this is not a trek to make alone? (Will have a guid and cook) and beside the diamonx (think that is the name) and Mate coca, is there any other advice to help prepare for the altitude? I am really nervous I wont be able to amke the hike, if something were to happen is there a way for emergency to get to you? thank you so much for any advice!
