Fly Fishing in Cumbria  (5 Answers)

We're going to be spending several weeks in Bowston, Cumbria this coming summer. It looks like there are some nice streams in the photos we've seen. Is fly fishing a sport in the Lake District? Should we bring our fly rods?

Thanks.

Advice of Cumbrias Local  (9 Answers)

Hello! I need an advice of Cumbrias Locals. I have a pen friend who lives alone in a small village Mealsgate. We had been exchaiging letters every day for more than 3 months till last Thursday whan he didn't answer my last message. He is not a person who stops correspondence without any explination and I am afraid that he may be in trouble. He relocated to Mealsgate about 2 months and don't know his neighbours. Most people come to this place only for a weekend. So if he felt bad or locked or anything else it was possible that there were nobody to hepl! I had a such type bad experience when I couldn't open my bathroom door and thought that I might stay there forever. So I worry and don't know what to do. I found local police email but I am afraid they will dicide that it is a joke. I actually hope that he is fine but his computer is broken or just doesn't want to communicate but I would like to be sure that he doesn't need help.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Irina

Off the Beaten Track Sites?

We will be traveling beginning next Saturday for a short visit and would like recommendations on what to see/do that are available in mid-March. We have visited this glorious area before, so we are looking for other than the major tourist sites.

We're staying at a B&B near Ambleside and another B&B near Askrigg during our short trip.

Thank you for any assistance!

Camille

Travel plans - Cumbria - Northumberland - Eden Valley - Lakes - Hadrians Wall  (1 Answer)

In mid October 08, after a stay in the Highlands my wife and I are considering train to Carlisle and hiring a car. We are visiting the south of the Eden Valley - Appleby, Long Marton, Dufton - where my family originally farmed (from at least 17th Cent) before settling in Oz in 1850s. We also want to see the Lakes District and spend a few days visiting Roman sites along the Wall. We expect to have 4 full days and 2 part days before train to Bath.

We are considering using a central base (hotel or B & B) and driving out to accomplish our travel interests. Being a bit of a horse lover, my wife wants to go riding on the Fells.

We think these ideas are achievable given the distances involved - or lack of them. It all seems so small and compact compared to travelling in Oz.

We would be grateful for any comments, criticisms or tips about the above; recommendations about accomodation; must-see places in the Lakes area; must see places along the Wall - Vindolanda and Cawfields seem to me to be definites.

many thanks

Coast to coast bike ride (Cumbria toTyne & Wear)  (1 Answer)

My husband has decided to do the Coast to coast bike ride next May. He's 56 years old and reasonably fit. He has a new 'retro' type bike (not a mountain bike). He would like to receive any info from anyone who has done it, especially suggestions as to how far he could expect to go in one day, (at a leisurely pace) and recommended places to stay. He was thinking in terms of 20 - 25 miles miles a day is this reasonable?

Romantic B & B  (2 Answers)

Hi

Would be grateful if anybody knows or has stayed in a romantic B & B, guest house or hotel especially around the Keswick area.

We have stayed in Keswick a number of times in some lovely places but this time I thought I would treat my husband to a romantic, cosy break.

Thanks.
