Letterkenny?  (2 Answers)

We would like to travel around Donegal, playing golf and seeing the sights. Is Letterkenny a good town to do that from? It seems bigger than Donegal Town, but not as big as Derry.

County Donegal in late September  (9 Answers)

Can anybody help me.
I will be in County Donegal from 27/09/2008 to 04/10/2008. I have booked a bungalow in Burtonsport for the week, to use as a base, and will be travelling by car with 3 others, all pensioners and unable to walk very far. Driving is not a problem but walking is, and I am looking for scenic and photographic locations within easy walking distance of the car. Here is my criteria which is very flexible.
1:- Scenic drives and views.
2;- Mountain passes and Glens.
3:- Costal routes with scenery.
4:- Castles and gardens that can be viewed.
5:- Travelling times from Belfast Ferry Terminal to Burtonsport and Burtonsport to Giants Causeway.
6:- Travelling times to different locations suggested.
7:- Local to Burtonsport Irish music establishments that are open this time of year.
8:- Weather condions for this time of year and what kind of clothing required, and are the daylight hours.
9:- Do the ferries to the Islands from Burtonsport run at this time of year, and can I take the car.
We shall be doing our sightseeing during the daylight hours and relaxing at night in local establishments where we can eat and possibly hear music.
It will be much appreciated for your replys to my numerous Questions.

Glenveagh National Park, Errigal Mountain etc.

I'll be traveling in Donegal Oct 13-18. The more I read about this region the more it fascinates me! Who can help me with a few questions:

1. Is the Glenveagh National Park open daily in October? One website says so, another website says Thursdays to Saturdays only!

2. Climbing Mt. Errigal: Is the mountain part of the Glenveagh National Park and accessible only when the park is open, or can it be accessed from Gweedore and climbed any time?

3. Where in County Donegal would I find live music in local pubs on weekdays, not just weekends?
4. My preliminary itinerary looks like this:
- day 1: Donegal town, St. John's point, Killybegs (sleep there).
- day 2: Carrick, Slieve League (lookouts, climb); sleep in Glencolumbkille.
- day 3: Glencolumbkille area, Glenesh pass, Ardara, Dungloe, Gweedore (sleep there).
- day 4: Errigal mountain, Fanad Head, Letterkenny (sleep there).
- day 5: Inishowen penninsula: Buncrana, Malin Head, Culdalf, Ininshowen Head. Sleep in Derry.

I would appreciate any comments and suggestions!!!
Thanks!

Ilan

Donegal in October???  (5 Answers)

I am traveling to Ireland in October, which I know is not the ideal month to travel in this country.
I'd like to do a driving + hiking trip in Donegal. I don't mind colder temperatures, and some rain here and there, but not steady rainfall day in and day out and muddy trails everywhere.

My question is: is it reasonable to do this kind of trip in October, or should I go to the southwest of Ireland instead?

Questions about Letterkenny restaurants and Donegal tours  (1 Answer)

I'm going to be involved in a field study, based in Letterkenny, for about 4 weeks this summer. Only a couple of restaurants are listed on this website, but I was wondering if anyone had recommendations for other good but inexpensive places to eat in Letterkenny.

Also, are there good day tours of Donegal that are based in Letterkenny? I'm having difficulty finding much of anything--I'm not finding the various Letterkenny and Donegal webpages terribly useful in actual planning.

Thanks!
Laura

13 day Ireland Itinerary... does this look reasonable?  (2 Answers)

We will be flying into Dublin on July 19th (arriving at 6pm), and flying out of Shannon on Aug. 1st at 2pm.

Dublin, 1 night
Portrush, 2 nights (Antrim Coast and the Giants Causeway)
Donegal, 3 nights (Inishowen Peninsula, Letterkenny, Achill Island, Carrowmore)
Clifden, 3 nights (side trips to Galway, Aran Islands, Connemara)
Dingle, 3 nights
Bunratty, 1 night

Any recommendations for where to stay in Donegal? This is our first trip to Ireland, and I want to see as much as possible (of course!), but also not to spend our whole trip sitting in the car. I chose to head North from Dublin, instead of the 'typical' Southern route (Kilkenny, Kenmare, Cashel, etc) in hopes of avoiding some of the tourist hordes and getting to see more of the 'authentic' Ireland. :) I love finding out of the way places, and historic sites that don't have boothes seeling tourist knick knacks all around them.

Any feedback appreciated! Thanks!
Mari

Donegal without a car?  (1 Answer)

Hello there,

My friend and I are planning to go to Ireland next June. We would like to go to Galway and then to Sligo, and we are thinking of wandering further North up to Donegal. The thing is, neither of us can drive so we will have to use public transport...
Are there any places we could go to by bus in county Donegal, and if so, which town would be the best base for some day trips or walks? Or maybe it is not worth it without a car?

Thanks for any advice you may have. :)

Inishowen vs. Antrim Coast

I've have limited days in Ireland and I've got to make a choice between driving the Inishowen 100 or going to Giant's Causeway and driving a portion of the Antrim Coast. If you've been to both, which would you choose as most scenic?

Where to stay in Donegal and How long does it "really" take to get to Malin Head?  (6 Answers)

Hi,
My husband and I are planning our first trip to Ireland in February. We are going to Strand Hill in Sligo to meet his sister, but then we have a free day/night before we need to be back in Dublin.
We are hoping to go somewhere in Donegal, but can't decide where. Donegal Town seems really interesting and lovely, but from what I've seen of Malin Head it just looks incredible. We are renting a car, but have heard that it can take a LONG time to drive to Malin Head from County Sligo. Can anyone give me a ballpark time estimate? I know the drive is beautiful, so I don't want to rush it, but since we've only got one day I don't want to spend it all in the car (plus it's February so I imagine it'll get dark fairly early).

Any other suggestions of areas to visit would be much appreciated, it's so hard to pick since they all look so great from my online research.
We aren't looking for nightlife, just something pretty with a pub will do.
Thanks,
Amanda

Coming to Ireland for Christmas  (4 Answers)

From Washington, DC and coming to Ireland for Christmas. Looking to find a welcoming place to unwind and enjoy Christmas. I am 30 and will be with my boyfriend. Both of Irish heritage, but neither of us have been to Ireland. We love the ocean, comfy pubs, so little time and so much to see. We only have 5 days. December 23rd-28th. Would like a great central place that is fun and cozy with much to drive and see around it. If you have any recommendations, it is appreciated. Don't even know where to begin. Thanks so much-Katherine
