Costa Rica

Driving in Guanacaste

I am looking for information on traveling by road from Samara to Tamarindo, in Costa Rica. Is driving recomended, of should I fly ? Is it best to drive the coastal route, or go inland to the hwy 21 ?

It depends on the time of year you go. If its during the rainy season, the rivers cannot be crossed. You would have to take the paved road the entire way. But during the dry season you can take the coastal road most of the way, about 3 hours north, crossing about 3 rivers. You then have to head inland towards Santa Cruz. There may be a way to get to a coastal road sooner but you should be well versed in map reading and have a good sense of direction or you will waste a lot of time.

The road could be pretty rough. Believe me, after 3 hours you'll be begging for some pavement.
