HI what's the best way to get from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap and how long does it take. Cheers Sean
Early morning bus is my recommendation. Takes 4hrs plus or minus and runs from central area of Phnom Penh to Siem Reap bus station where you will find no shortage of tuk-tuks to take you to you hotel. I cant recall cost but it was pretty cheap and the buses are of acceptable standard without being flash. Nice village scenery along the route.
Make sure you don't race through Phnom Penh - lots to see and do there too.
Other options include flying and boat - flying will be only slightly quicker (when you take into account waiting in airport etc etc) and you see nothing along the way. The boat trip takes longer.
Thanks for your reply. Boat sounds interesting. Cheers Sean
Sorry I don't have details on it - someone will for sure. I felt it would get rather boring after an hour or so.
I did the boat many years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it although there were some concerns at the time about how safe they were. there were issues about over-crowding, lack of lifejackets and so on. I really can't comment on the situation now but it is certainly worth looking into. I found it to be a very enjoyable journey if a little crowded. You get a great look at life on the Lake.
When I was there, they had stopped people sitting on the roof due to a recent accident. That would have been my preferred place. At least if the boat goes belly up, I'll take my chance and jump and swim.
Help, having trouble remembering but it was before that and without digging out my old passport, wherever that is, I am struggling.
I am guessing maybe late 90's.
I also did the boat in about 2005 and at that time you could go up on the roof which was definitely the way to go. I usually prefer boats to buses but the bus is faster in this case.
I did the boat trip back in 2008, and have a little more info here:
