Weather November  (2 Answers)

I know I asked yesterday about Florida but we are also looking at Palm/Desert Springs California - what is the weather liable to be like in November

Will the roads be snow free to Las Vegas and what is the weather liable to be like in Vegas in November.

Plan to possibly fly to Los Angeles - use Desert/Palm Springs and tour from there and possibly take a few days out to visit Vegas - could even fly into Vegas if the flights were cheaper

Many thanks for so many questions

Direct flights - California to BWI  (11 Answers)

I am taking a cruise from San Pedro in October 2017. I can get a direct flight from BWI to LAX on Alaska Air. But I can't get a direct flight back. All the flights to BWI require a plane change in some place like Dallas, Chicago or Philly. Would I have better luck flying out of San Diego or San Francisco? Are there any direct flights on any airline from anywhere in California to BWI?

US-Roadtrip to California in 2017  (48 Answers)

Hello :)

Me (Jennifer, 19) and my best friend (Lea, 18) want to do a road trip in fall 2016 by car.
- We plan to rent a car, since i work for a big company, we can rent a car through our company rental card. So our age will not be a problem. A normal sedan car would be fine for us.
- We like to / can stay up to 20days
- We like to stay in hotels. Not 5 Stars, but the hotels should be good!

We want to start in Los Angeles, and visit the city for a few days. Then maybe drive to Las Vegas and see the city. From Las Vegas we want to see something of the desert, maybe DeathValley, Monument National Park, Grand Canyon? :) And then it would be nice to go from Las Vegas to San Francisco and visit the city. After that we like to drive the coastal highway one down to either Los Angeles or San Diego (if the drive from LA to San Diego is nice?).

Soo... my questions:
Do you think its a good idea? What should we see visit? How many days do you advice, and where? Any idea how much it will cost? We saw that hotels in LA are around (200-400$/night per room for a double room). Are the other cities similar to that price? What should we definitely do and what definitely avoid? :)

Thank yo for your answers,
- Jennifer :)

SF/LV/LA trip itinerary help  (14 Answers)

Hi everyone, I am travelling for the first time to California, and need a bit of assistance. I am landing at LAX at roughly 13:30, and should probably be out of the airport by 14:30. Our trip will be mid January for a total of 17 days. And I have already got flights from SFO-LAS, and then LAS-LAX. All the accommodation is already booked, now its all about the finer details to the trip.

Part 1: The first bit of info that I need is regarding getting from LAX to San Francisco, I have been advised to take the PCH and stop over for the night in Morro Bay/Cayucos, then drive early the next day to the Monterey Bay Aquarium for a few hours before making our way to San Francisco. I have read many forums saying its not advisable to make that trip in 1 day, as theres too much to see, which I agree with... Unfortunately its that or take a flight direct to San Francisco. Please can you tell me if it is at all worth making that drive, or just taking a flight.

Part 2: We will spend 5 nights in San francisco, and I am struggling to define what are must do's, as so many people recommend different things... right now this is my plan, please critique it,and help me make the right choices.

Day 1: Arrive at the hotel mid day in Fishermans Wharf, spend an hour or two relaxing at the hotel, then going out to explore the Wharf, Pier 39, Ghirardelli's and maybe catch the evening tour of Alcatraz. Return and have dinner close to the hotel.
Day 2: Head out just after sunrise, taking the Cable car from Fishermans Wharf to Market street, and will probably walk to the Ferry Building and explore there, then make our way back to Union Square, and up to china town and exploring there. Afterwards, taking the cable car to Lombard street, then head back to the hotel, relax before dinner and find a nice area to eat with some music.

Side note -- please can you tell me if i fit too many or too little things per day

Day 3: Up and out early again to Steiner Str to walk through the park and see the Pink Ladies. Up to Golden Gate Park and the Academy of Science, the Morrison Planetarium, and the Japanese Tea Garden. then to the Golden gate bridge, will probably rent a bicycle and cycle to the other end... We would love to from here, go to Muir woods, spend an hour there, before making our way back to the hotel, again relax a bit, then go out for dinner.
Day 4 : This day is still up for debate, but my wife would love to see Yosemite for the day... I know that you can easily spend a week without seeing everything, but the thought is that while we are on the west coast, we should make the effort to see the park, or at least as much as we can in 1 day.
Day 5 : Take a small group tour to Napa and spend the day exploring the wineries.

Part 3 : Departing to Vegas at around 11am, spending 3 nights there. This part of the trip is pretty much easy enough to plan for, but the highlight would be a helicopter trip to the grand canyon.

Part 4 : Depart Vegas to LAX, we will be spending 4 nights staying in Hollywood area, and another 4 nights saying in Anaheim. Now for this part of the journey, we LOVE theme parks, and we are dedicating 3-4 days to it.

Day 1 : Land at LAX at 13:00, make our way to the hotel, relax for a few hours, then off to see Hollywood BLVD, for the rest of the night.
Day 2 : Drive to Six Flags Magic Mountain ( Never been to a Six Flags before, looking forward to it).
Day 3 : Universal Studios
Day 4 : Tour around LA (Please help me which things to see)
Day 5 : Move to the new hotel in Anaheim, and explore the area for the day
Day 6 : DisneyLand
Day 7 : Disney Adventure

Side Note: Let me know if 2 days is too much for these 2 parks.

Day 8 : Still debatable, was thinking of driving to San diego for the last day.

We fly out the next morning at 1AM, so don't want to do too much on the last day... pretty much just relax.

That you all in advance for the advise and I look forward to you responses.

Silicon Valley in October; hotels and restaurants  (4 Answers)

We're going to be in Silicon Valley for a wedding in October. We want to stay in either Saratoga or Los Gatos. We'd like recommendations for hotels and restaurants. We plan to stay on for a few days, and will probably take the train to San Francisco, though we may rent a car.

California Roadtrip & Yellowstone NP, When & What Car?  (11 Answers)

I'm planning a Roadtrip to California. I would arrive at Los Angeles. I want to see LA (2days are enough, been here before) Las Vegas Yosemite San Francisco Drive from SF to LA via Highway No1 with 1-2 stopover nights.

And i want to see Yellowstone National Park by fly to Idaho/Jackson hole

My timeframe would be around 20days.

So when to go? I could go in Late April-Early June, or Septemper-October.

Spring: Tioga Pass maybe still closed, for Yosmite i would have to go via Bakersfield Yosmite would have beautiful waterfalls LV Area is not so hot Coastal Weather at HGW1 would be not so good ( i head) Yellowstone nice

Fall: Tioga Pass sure open No waterfalls, but maybe autumn colors? Coastal Weather is good (they write sep-oct is best for that) LV are not so hot Yellowstone nice

What would you suggest. I read that Yellowstone is both nice in Spring and Fall so that is not the critical point. In Spring i maybe will hit Memorial Day what would result in high cost and many people?

About the car, what would be best for this journey, is a 4x4 or so needed? I would go for a standard SUV thing, but maybe there's something better?

Honeymoon in California  (7 Answers)

I'm looking to find out opinions on where to stay in California that would be a great location to venture on foot to see Hollywood Blvd, Universal Studios, studio tours, and Hollywood Celebrity tours. We are not opposed to taking public transportation either. We just want recommendations on close proximity to see the sites without paying an arm and a leg for rates, or spending too much time on buses to get to and from. We are looking to spend about 4 days in this location to take in the sites of the entertainment industry as my fiance and I are huge TV and movie enthusiasts. We are also on a budget and want to be close to affordable hotels and restaurants. Any help will be appreciated.

Ghost towns or other things to see on drive between SF and Yosemite and yosemite to Monterey?  (6 Answers)

Hi there- We will be driving from SF to Yosemite and then from Yosemite to Monterey area. I was wondering if there are any ghost towns along either drive that would be fun for my kids to check out. I don't really want to go too far out of the way in either direction but somewhere generally along the way.

Any other tips on places to stop to break up the drive on either end are very much appreciated! Thank you.

Transportation from SFO to Monterey  (4 Answers)

My flight has been delayed and will arrive SFO after 3pm. I hope to travel on to Monterey late afternoon on shuttle or by public transportation. I looked at shuttle service and a one way is $55. Not sure where the drop off will be as I am staying in Monterey overnight near transit plaza to be close for early morning ongoing journey to Santa Barbara. Do I have enough time to do this journey to Monterey by public transportation, if its more reasonable, or is the shuttle my best option. Have not been able to switch to earlier flight out of JFK and want to avoid overnight in San Francisco as will have enough time to visit on my return journey. Thanks.

One home base in souther CA or two?  (10 Answers)

Youngish, active retirees looking to leave snowy East Coast for southern California next winter (Jan-Feb) for about 3 weeks, Possibly plan on renting via VRBO or similar or possibly suite hotels and visit from San Diego to Santa Barbara. (hope to do Big Sur, SF, etc on another trip). Interests are usual sights, museums, towns, (but not the silly touristy stuff) in the warmer weather. Question is whether to try to stay in one, two, or even three locations?? Is a base near LA workable with day trips, or even 2-3 nights stays north and south, or some other plan? Thoughts, please?

Cheaper options for short stays  (5 Answers)

Hi there. I am Canadian thus the weak dollar and would like to travel in California for 2.5 weeks. In terms of prices I was startled, they are really high. I will be travelling with two young children so couch surfing may not be the best option. Airbnb seems expensive too. Where to? San Fran, Napa, Carmel, Saratoga springs, big sur, Santa Barbara and Los Angeles near the coast as in Torrence or Santa Monica. Any help on options? I see roach motels of over 150 US that's a lot! I don't like roaches!

Any evening transportation from Monterey to Santa Barbara  (11 Answers)

Have visited all of the above cities previously. NY flight arrives SFO after 3pm and hope to travel by shuttle from airport to Monterey. Trying yto avoid paying hotel for one night in Monterey as hotels in Santa Barbara are heavily booked at weekend. Original plan was to stay 3 nights in Monterey,  take Amtrak Surfliner to Santa Barbara as on previous trips.  Did not see any nonstop flight from SFO to SBA.

Trying to switch and go directly to Santa Barbara early in week 6/21,  return via Monterey by Amtrak for 3 nights and then on to San Francisco for 1 or 2 nights before my late night flight back to JFK. Any suggestions if this is at all possible. Monterey shuttle leaves SFO at 4:30pm so it might be difficult. I did travel one time from SFO via San Jose but have not found any transportation late evening from San Jose to Santa Barbara. Are there other shuttles doing this route? If this is not possible I might just extend my stay in Monterey to enjoy Big Sur and the other scenic areas. Looking forward to any helpful suggestions from members. Thank you.

Shuttle from San Francisco airport to Monterey  (8 Answers)

Can anyone help me find shuttle from airport to Monterey transit center or closeby. Arriving SFO mid June at 3pm. I am senior and prefer a direct ride rather than having layover. Have not booked hotel yet but have been to Monterey several times. Tried taking a train from airport last time and missed the connection from San Jose by few minutes. Would like to continue to Monterey after arrival to avoid having to overnight in San Francisco. Will be staying in San Francisco on my return before leaving for NY. Did not see a listing on internet but expect there are several shuttles and appreciate any help available. Help will be appreciated.

Road trip destinations advice ?  (10 Answers)

Hey! I'm hoping I can gain some advice from you all!
My boyfriend and I will be having a holiday in California this September! We plan to stop over at a few different places during our break! So far we have decided on and booked the beginning and end of our trip!
San Francisco - 3 nights
Las Vegas - 4 nights
We have 15 nights away in total.
After our stay in San Francisco we are a bit confused/undecided on what to do. We want to visit Yosemite for 3 nights after but wasn't sure wether to take one night and drive down the big Sur and stay over then drive into Yoesmite? After Yosemite we plan to drive to LA and stay there for 4-5 nights dependent on if we take the extra night to drive the big Sur.
I guess in a long winded way im asking is it worth it to do this extra driving or should we just go straight on to Yosemite after San Francisco ? In my mind I wonder if it will be a big drive and a little anticlimactic when we arrive there!
Any advice you may have would be greatly appreciated :)

Hiking in California  (4 Answers)

Hi,

I am from the New Jersey area and I hike in the Adirondacks (46, 4000 footers), New Hampshire (48, 4000 footers) and the Catskills (35, 3500 footers). Each of these areas has a group of mountains you can work towards. I am thinking about hiking in California and I was wondering if you know of any such group of mountains in California? I would appreciate any help you could offer or any website you can point me towards.

California trip, El Nino  (10 Answers)

Hello, we are French and we live in Paris. We have a trip in the south of California for February 2016. The original plan was to go in Los Angeles, and then to rent a car to go to Death Valley, Las Vegas, Grand Canyon, Prescott and finally Joshua Tree and Palm Springs.
However with El Nino and the thunderstorms and mudslides, the road trip should be difficult.... We aren't interested to come in California just to visit museums... and to see a lot of rain... even if rain could be a good thing for this state after years and years of drought.
Obviously there are more to come in the next 2 months...
Do you think it will be better to cancel that trip or to wait a little ?
