Visiting brussels, is it possible to go to Vimy via train ????

Hello

I'll be staying in Brussels in July and I wonder if it is possible to go to Vimy see the Canadian memorial site at Vimy ridge...

Or may by bus ? but I would much prefer a train if possible...

Ieper might be also a possible destination... any recommendation appreciated.

thanks in advance

It is certainly possible to travel Brussels>Ieper by train. Journey time is around 1h 44m, with some direct trains and some with one change. One-way fare is17.10 euro.

Train times, details and fares in English on the official Belgian railway website:

http://www.belgianrail.be/

Don't miss the 'In Flanders Fields' Museum' whilst you are in Ieper: it is the most moving experience.

I cannot find Vimy on the Belgian international railway website:

http://www.b-europe.com/Travel

but the reliable

bahn.com/i/view/overseas/en/...

shows it as a journey of almost 4 hours. I'm not sure that's a feasible daytrip, to be honest.

It might be easier perhaps to stay overnight in e.g. Arras in order to visit Vimy?

I'm not sure if any organised battlefield tours operate from Brussels but that might be another option. I took mine from Brugge (Bruges) and it was excellent:

That particular tour can be tailored, to some extent, in order to meet the desires of those taking part. Brugge is only around an hour by train from Brussels:

Vimy is acrossthe border in the North of France. It seems you have to travelto lille and take a local train and at Vimy local transportation to the cemetery.

I assume you could also take the train to Arras (around 2.5 hours from Brussels) and then a taxi to Vimy...or maybe a bus?

Lille would certainly be the fastest rail journey (from 46m, with one change) but it is quite some way from Vimy. There are small group daytours from Lille and Arras. Here's one operator:

Hi Paul,
For Ieper : you have a train every hour, also on week-end (Sat, Sun) The journey is during 1:45 a 1:55 . For some you have to change one time. If you like I can drive you around on Sunday if I'm free. (I live on 15' from Ieper)
For Vimy it's a bit more complicated: : best is take the train to Lille than change and get one to Arras . There is some trains to Vimy but the Vimy station is on 5 km from the site, and it's only 12 km from Arras ...so ...You have possibilities to book batelfields tour with a mini-bus (N-D de Lorette included) If you need more info , don't doub just ask ! ;-)

A little off topic. I read an article today that in the town of Lens at 20 km North of Vimy, there is a new branch of the Louvre museum. See: http://www.louvrelens.fr/
