Hello we are two young couples (30s) traveling to the Black Forest at the end of the month. We are planning on visiting small towns, eating the local food, wine and beers. Where hoping you could give us some tips on wich places not to miss (towns, restaurants, bars, views). Wich would you think is best? To rent a car or to buy the big groups regional trains ticket?? Is it comfortable to travel around the Black Forest in train or is best to go there by car? Thank you very much for your help. Ana
When staying in the Black Forest, your Hotel/Guest house should issue you with a Kunos card, this entitles you to free travel on trains, bus's and trams in the area.
My favorite place is called Staufen a few miles from Freiburg, there is an open air wine bar close to the station and the Cafe Decker, has great coffee and cakes, not to mention their home made chocolates.
In your case I would say car is best. You could drive along Black Forest Panorama Road ( black-forest-travel.com/land... and be more flexible in general. Since there are four of you, costs will moderate.
I would visit Freiburg, even though the 'Bächle', the curbside aqueducts, probably won't be filled with water (still too cold). Climb up Schlossberg - that's the hill bordering Freiburg's old town - for a nice view.
You could consider driving as far south as to Lake Constance or spend a day in France, e.g. in Colmar.
Don't miss a visit to the Mummelsee if you are in the area. It's beautiful, and a walk around the lake is lovely. Since you'll be so close to Baden-Baden, why not go there too. It's internationally famous and so picturesque...yet it has a cozy feeling. Take a horse & carriage ride like we did. And definitely travel by car - much more flexibility - you can take a spontaneous side road that way or pull into a winery.
Have a great time.
Thank you All!!
