3 day drive through bavaria looking for neet little towns with charm Going in Mid-May  (4 Answers)

Got three days to drive from Sussen Germany back to MUC airport. Will have a car. Like to go make it all the way to Berchtesgaden (Eagles nest maybe?) on the way. Neuschwantstein castle a plus to see. Any recommendations for little villages tucked into the mountains on the way? Roads and hotels recommendations a plus as well.

Or am I being too ambitious with 350km of driving in 3 days?

TX!
Rich.

Itinerary suggestions!  (12 Answers)

Hi! My husband and I are trying to plan a trip to Munich and the surrounding area in early April! I am pretty overwhelmed with all the options! We are thinking 10 days and are hoping you all could give us maybe some good itinerary options. We are not looking at the nightlife so much, but maybe choices of places to eat, visit and the history, some castles, definitely the outdoors, some charming villages to stay/visit , and ideally some bike rides if that is doable this time of year. We plan on renting a car at least part/all of the time.....I would love a few tips and suggestions!

Thanks so much!

Hotels walking distance to Nuremberg Xmas Market  (3 Answers)

Hi trying to find out a few hotel or accommodation options which are closest to or directly on the Xmas market - say 5 - 10 mins or less walking distance as with 3 small kids. Bit of a struggle on the internet to get a direct answer. Grateful for any recommendations or suggestions. Thanks.

Nuremberg Xmas Market and Beginner Sking

Greetings forum. We are planning to go to Nuremberg to experience the Xmas market from around Dec 16th. 3 kids ages 8, 10 and 13. My questions are:
(a) I have the options of direct flights to Munich, Frankfurt or Berlin. From the map it looks like Munich or Frankfurt might be the closet to then get to Nuremberg. Please advise which will be the best airport to fly into out of the 3 options for onward fastest/efficient transportation to Nuremberg - taxi or rail.

(b) After 3 days of the market which we think should be enough, we are thinking of combining this with a "learn to ski" vacation. Is there any recommendations nearby Nuremberg that might work esp in Dec month? I have heard of persons combining Nuremberg market with sking in Austria so not sure if learn to ski options are available in environs. Recommendations on Austria welcome as well if better.

Thanks!

Bayern-Ticket on Handy Ticket?  (4 Answers)

Does anyone know if you can purchase a Bayern-Ticket and display it on your phone through Handy Ticket in the DB Navigator app? The DB website is ambiguous; it says you can in one section, but in another section, it only lists a handful of Länder-Tickets compatible with Handy Ticket, not including the Bayern-Ticket. I did a dry run, and it appears you can purchase the ticket though the app, but of course I didn't actually complete the transaction. Any insights appreciated.

best town/city for scenery  (9 Answers)

I'm looking to stay 2/3 nights next month in Bavaria, somewhere that has dramatic scenery (mountains/lakes,etc.), but isn't hours away from the nearest airport.

I've looked at Fussen, but not sure if there's enough to do there.

Could someone please suggest some other places? Thanks!

Forsthaus Falkenau - real place name  (3 Answers)

Hi, I would like to visit the place where the television series Forsthaus Falkenau was filmed. Village Falkenau in reality does not exist. I would like to know, how the real village is called and where exactly it is. Is there a museum or something like that in that famous house?
Thank you for answers and have a nice day!

Munich next Tuesday  (1 Answer)

I am taking some friends to Southern Bavaria next week. We will be close to Munich on Tuesday, Sept. 16. I want to stop and show them Marienplatz, Frauenkirche, hopefully eat at the Hofbrauhaus, etc, where would be a good place to park for about 5 hours? We'll be driving from Mainz, heading to Grainau, where we will stay and spend a couple days visiting Newschwanstein, Hohenschwangau, etc.
Thanks!!

Flying within Germany  (5 Answers)

Quick question- Going to be on two flights within Germany soon. Any flights in and from the US we have to have our liquids(ie shampoo, toothpaste) separate, so they can be looked at. Do I need to be concerned with this in Germany too, or just pack it in the carry on? I would hate to hold up the line if I had to dig through the bag, so it's best to know ahead of time. Thanks.

Where to stay and things to do between Fuessen and Chiemsee ?  (9 Answers)

A friend and I are in Germany in August/ September this year (2014) and we are planning going to spend 4 nights in the area of Fuessen or thereabouts. We are not that keen on Neuschwanstein rather something different. So we would like to see Schloss Linderhof, the Wieskirche and Schloss Herrenchiemsee. Has anybody any other good or better idea's of which places to see during that time? And any suggestions where to stay (hotel's or apartments, no youth hostels please)? We are traveling by car but would like to stay somewhere in the 'middle'. Somewhere nice and central, between the sites above, so we can even out the travel distance.
Thank you.

Question about sofa beds and dining with a child.  (5 Answers)

Tickets are purchased and now we are choosing places to stay for our trip to Bavaria. We will be three adults (myself, my wife, mother in law, and our (then)four year old son. I am looking at vacation apartments and quite a few have a sofa bed as the second bed. Here in the US a sofa bed is typically a miserable contraption that is extremely uncomfortable-a thin mattress and bar under your back all night. Are German sofa beds similar, or are they much better? Second, most dinners we ate had more than generous portions, so is it ok to share our food with our son(keep in mind there will be three adults to share with him), or is this frowned upon?
Thank you,
John

Mittenwald to Vipiteno drive in April?  (10 Answers)

Hello all. Planning a family trip to Bavaria in March/April for two weeks. A little early and cooler out, but airfare at this time is $1000 cheaper for all of us-hard to say no to that. We will be staying in MIttenwald for a few days, and I thought it would be pretty cool to surprise everyone with a little drive to Vipiteno Italy for part of the day, plus we've never been to Italy. Is this drive typically possible at this time of year, or are the mountains not passable? Thoughts?

Buy an apartment in Bavaria?  (7 Answers)

First off, my wife are mostly curious about this and most likely will never get to own an apartment in Bavaria. That being said, we were curious and just checked out a site of apartments for sale and found some reasonably priced ones. That got a us thinking a bit, but I suspect there is more to it than just the selling price, such as monthly or yearly fees or high annual taxes. I have a hard time believing that I can go there with a $100k and buy a nice little one bedroom apartment and be all set. So what am I missing?

Explore Bavarian region  (19 Answers)

Hello VTers, This is that time of the year when we plan our holidays. We are a couple planning a DIY tour.

This year we are planning to do 10 days in Germany and Austria.

We would be flying into Munich and would like to explore the Bavarian region for three to four days, especially the Bavarian Alps, the Neuschwanstein Castle, Nuremberg, Dachau camp and of course a bit of Munich. We would be heading off towards Austria once we do Bavaria.

I would deeply appreciate all your suggestions regarding the best base town and how to travel to the various sites we would like to explore.

We have not intended to join any tour group and would like to do most of the stuff by public transport.

Any links would be most gratefully accepted.

Thanks.

Off the wall question opinion  (6 Answers)

I am a 35 year old journalist photographer/ working with various magazines and will finally get my chance to visit Wasserburg am Bodensee and Lindau where my grandfather was from and the rest of my fathers family. He was a photographer, lived a very hard life, and is my main influence on my work and things I have done throughout life including my own photography career. While visiting my wife's family in Slovakia, I will finally get to go to Germany on assignment to my grandfathers home. I have held off on getting a tattoo for years - and wondered - would Germans/Bavarians think I am weird for having a Bavarian Lion on my arm symbolizing the area where my family is from? I have had one drawn up for years, but never wanted to get it until I was there. And yes it is a cool design, the one I have drawn up - just wondering about culture, not that I care what other people think, it is more of a memory thing for me....but also curious if German Culture would find it strange...I know...off the wall question for the forum. It would be combined with his name very small-

Options for my route  (5 Answers)

Finalizing the last leg of my Bavaria itenary and hope to get some views. I have finalized the places I am visiting, only checking the better route and where to spend the night given train timings. My route is from Munich to Fussen (will see Neuwanstein only) and day trip to Rothenburg (DIY city tour) and Wurzburg (the Residenz tour at 11 AM, explore the city and Marienburg Fortress).

I have recommendation it is easier to head to Wurzburg (instead of Rothenburg) from either Fussen. From Wurzburg I will head to Frankfurt airport to fly out (do not plan to see Frankfurt). On the last day my flight is at 10 PM so I aim to be at the Frankfurt airport by 7 PM and will depart to airport from Wurzburg latest by 5 PM.

Day 1 take morning train to Munich, arrive by 1 PM, check in / deposit luggage in hotel, quickly DIY walking tour. Overnight Munich. (Do not need suggestions on this day as have got a lot of forum reply on Munich express tour already). Looking for feedback specifically on Day 2 onwards (option A, B or C) or any better option is appreciated.

Option A
Day 2 day trip to Fussen, anticipate back by 6 / 7 PM, have the evening to maybe go to a beer garden... Overnight Munich.
Day 3 early morning check out take train to Rothenburg, deposit luggage in hotel, DIY walking tour, maybe at night for for watchman tour.... Overnight Rothenburg.
Day 4 early morning check out take train to Wurzburg, deposit luggage in train station, then see EXPRESS Wurzburg and head to Frankfurt airport

Option B
Day 2 day trip to Fussen, anticipate back by 6 / 7 PM, have the evening to maybe go to a beer garden... Overnight Munich.
Day 3 early morning check out take train to Rothenburg, deposit luggage in train station, spend whole day.... take night train to Wurzburg (only 1 hour) Overnight Wurzburg.
Day 4 early morning see EXPRESS Wurzburg and head to Frankfurt airport

Option C
Day 2 early morning check out, day trip to Fussen, deposit luggage at train station. Take night train to Wurzburg as easier to go to Wurzburg than Rothenburg from Fussen. Overnight Wurzburg.
Day 3 early morning take train (1 hour) to see EXPRESS Rothenburg, spend whole day.... take night train back to Wurzburg (only 1 hour) Overnight Wurzburg.
Day 4 early morning see EXPRESS Wurzburg and head to Frankfurt airport

Which option is better? Or is there any better option? Thanks!
