Amsterdam

Seeking information regarding transportation

13 travelers will be traveling to Amsterdam (Hotel Aalders) from a Viking River Cruise on 9/14/16.

I am seeking information regarding the most efficient mode of transportation to the hotel from the port and then on 9/15/16, back to the airport.

Thanks so much!

You can take tram #16 from the Central station to the Rijksmuseum tram stop. This means a walk from the cruise terminal to the city side of the station and a walk from the tram stop to the hotel. A more expensive way is to pre-book 2 taxi vans.

To travel to the Air port take a train from the station or ask the hotel to book 2 mini-vans of the Air port shuttle service.

BTW Do you know where the cruise will end? Sometimes it may end at a terminal more West than the usual one at the North side of the station

Let me try to answer your 2nd question, as I haven't checked where the Viking cruise ships docks. Your hotel is within a few blocks of the museum quarter. There is a bus that goes over 30 minutes or so from the museum quarter to the airport. It makes a reasonable number of stops and I am thinking it takes about 30 minutes. This is the easiest as far as I am concerned, but I don't know how you define efficient. You can take the tram/taxi or bus to the central train station and there is a train that runs straight to the airport.

Karl,

That bus is a good suggestion. I'll check it, because there's also an earlier morning service.

When does your flight depart?

Hello,

Since you are taking a cruise, I am assuming you and your friends will have a good deal of luggage & hand-luggage. Although Amsterdam has an excellent transportation system, I would suggest that you consider a different method for your purpose -- for a large group such as your, getting on & off trams or buses may be difficult and especially if the bus or tram has a lot of people already on it. See my tip,[original VT link] on using Tinker Taxis which can be pre-booked for all your needs in advance. They are very efficient, reliable, and the cost in view of the convenience is excellent in my opinion. We used it twice while in Amsterdam ourselves this past May so please take a look at my tip if you wish. This works well for transportation to/from the cruise port, hotel, and airport alike.

Hope this helps a little.

Have fun!

Karl,

No hard feelings.
I will be in Canada soon.

BTW That bus you were talking about is the Connexxion company (not the local Amsterdam GVB!) bus # 197. First bus at 5:17AM at the Rijksmuseum bus stop.

The special early buses do not have stops in the center; these buses are more ment to be used by people who start working early at the Airport.

There are GVB night buses to the Central Station, where there are hourly night trains to the Airport.

PJ, thanks so much for the info. I will check with the group about pre-booking taxi vans. The only indication in the cruise documents is that we disembark in Amsterdam, Netherlands...I will try to find out which terminal.

From the Viking Cruise website:

Viking normally enjoys prime docking locations in all the ports we visit, but due to limited availability of docking spots in central Amsterdam, the port authority has reassigned several Viking ships to alternate arrangements.

So be aware, that your docking spot could change! (difficult to arrange a taxi van to meet at a yet unknown spot).
