What is your best one-line travel tip in practicing the 'Art of Travel'

After many hard learned lessons of how to travel, I eventually developed a style. Traveling can be an art, when you are passionate and become skilled in it.  What is it that you learned or practiced that proved to be your greatest asset while traveling?  Can be general or specific, but must be concise :)

Mine is (more of a philosophy, but it stayed with me and slowly became helpful),  "A good traveler leaves no tracks." -Chinese proverb

Bring an iPhone with minutes, texting, and data purchased from your cellular provider before you go and loaded with (a) electronic copies of your guide books and other reading material, (b) travel podcasts and other audio walking tours, (c) maps of every location where you will be, (d) music to soothe you to sleep, and (e) apps for photo-editing, travelogue writing, your airlines, hotel booking, games and movies for the plane, and email so you can make everyone else jealous with the latest photos taken with the phone. Nice one Lawrence. All that is so practical and useful, versus trying to constantly ask people and spend time hunting down all the various resources. My question is about the minutes / texting / data part of the iPhone. Do you just pay all the roaming charges when over seas then. Or is there some kind of SIM card you can buy locally to utilize your phone plan while over-seas. Thanks for your reply. · (1 likelikes)

Hi, Jon. DON'T pay the standard roaming charges. They'll drain your bank account. AT&T offers 3 different Passport plans. Each covers 30 days overseas services, which includes unlimited texting and AT&T WiFi (where available). Depending on the package (ranging from $30 to $120), it also offers between 120 MB & 800 MB of data. Voice calling costs $1.00/minute to $0.35/minute. http://www.att.com/shop/wireless/international.html#fbid=T_sumrJ9cH6 I get the cheapest ($30) plan. I leave my phone on so that texting will work, but I toggle data roaming on-and-off, depending on whether I need to use it. I also only allow apps that I am currently using to access data, rather than letting the background apps guzzle my limited data. The one time I had a problem (because Twitter refused to stop sending me data), AT&T immediately took all the charges related to overage off my bill. I've carried an iPhone oversees 2x/year since 2010. Because I have downloaded maps and audio info via WiFi, I've never been been disappointed or felt like I had to live without the access to the cellular data I needed when I really wanted to read email while on a train, check Google to ask what I was looking at, or even play an occasional turn on Words With Friends. · (0 likelikes)

Invest in some expensive travel gear, including clothes made for travel and for the outdoors. I bought some light weight, stain resistant, quick dry, wrinkle / odor free pants. They are super-fantastic to wear and look sharp in the airport. All these benefits justified the price I paid as it made for an ease of travel and provided added comfort when I was away from home.
