Unexpected cancelation travel stories?

Did you have to cancel a pre-arranged trip? Would like to hear your stories.

I planned to fly to Java from Kuala Lumpur. At the check-in desk in KLIA2 airport, I was informed that a Visa was required to go there. Hence we had to cancel everything. We went to Air Asia ticket box and asked to a lady 2 tickets for "anywhere" in Malaysia. The ticket box lady gave me 2 tickets to Kota Bharu which I had not heard in my life. The place is absolutely amazing.

My family paid for an all inclusive trip in Mexico and 1 week before we flew out a hurricane hit our resort and demolished it! Needles to say we didn't go on that trip.

My husband and I were checked in at the airport ready to board our flight when we got the call that my sister-in-law had passed away. We had booked thru Expedia and they refunded us our complete cost and the airline at the airport got our luggage to us before we left and credited our account. Both parties were so kind and easy to refund once they heard our circumstance!!

I had booked a trip to Thailand in Sept 2012. We were planning to visit Bangkok and Hua Hin. 2 days prior to departure I was diagnosed with a rare Cancer so we had to cancel. I received a refund from my travel insurance but obviously couldn't travel for a while. My partner and I booked a secluded lodge with a private hot tub and spent three days of bliss before my treatment started.

I once had to cancel a trip to India because the indian embassy were not able to process a visa for me in less than 10 working days and I did not have that much time to spare.

So I went to Sri Lanka instead as they could give me a visa on arrival.

Yes, I have a few. First was the time I booked my first flight as a big girl to visit a friend in Seattle. I went to the airport to get on the plane and they told me that I did not have a ticket for "San Francisco to Seattle' but from 'San Jose to Seattle'. I was so pissed and for whatever reason it was not able to be fixed for that weekend and they would not take responsibility. I cancelled the trip and went home to cry.

Then a friend I spent a long time booking a trip together all over China. Somehow we had managed to book our hotel across the street from where the first case of Sars was discovered. Needless to say we could not and did not go. We lost a $250 travel agent booking fee-which seems unfair because the flight was cancelled. That seemed VERY unfair to me as it would make sense we should be reimbursed. My friend and I decided it was not a good idea to go. I never made it back to a tour around China which is quite sad.

The third time turned out to my advantage for once. I had gone to the east coast for Thanksgiving and my return flight was cancelled after I had already arrived to the airport due to the Asiana aircrash at SFO the day of or day before, I can't recall right now. I called my parents who were closely to pick me, rescheduled my flight over the phone while everyone else stood in the longest line you could imagine. I got to spend like 4 more days with family which was great. Although I should add here my heart was heavy as I had flown into SFO from Asia many times over a five year period prior to that crash. I felt as though that could have been me easily, and that I was spared. The emotional part of the story though was when I flew back into SFO for the first time after the crash and saw the millions of pieces of shiny metal around all the airstrips shining like stars. It was unbelievable to see how far the wreckage covered. That was one white knuckled flight landing for sure. I have been fine since, but I think about that flight everytime I fly back into SFO.
