Angkor Wat, Cambodia. It's a 90 minute flight, Air Asia flies cheaply, and although the temples are crowded and Siem Reap is very touristy, the temples are absolutely worth seeing and amazing just the same.

Melaka (as suggested by Jae Oh) is very popular with Singaporeans - great food, lots of beautiful heritage sights and driveable from Singapore island. On weekends the centre of town turns into a thriving, bustling market - some tourists like it and make a point of being there, others prefer the being there during the week when it's quieter. Johor (right across the border) has great food inc. seafood that's much cheaper than what you can find in Singapore.

Take a day trip into Malaysia...very interesting and quite different from Singapore, Malaysia being a more typical Southeast Asia experience...

Tioman Island, Malaysia - you can get a coach from Singapore across to Johor Bahru then onto to Mersing and get a short ferry across to islands, I found Paya Beach Resort to be very relaxing and good value for money, or you could fly to Kuala Lumpur for about £18 from Singapore and spend a few days there

If it's for a side trip for a night or two, head across to Bintan which is part of the Riau Archipelago in Indonesia waters. Bintan is 45 minutes away from Singapore by express ferry. Tropical resorts like Banyan Tree Spa, and others make this a good beach theme getaway for a day or two. However the high end resorts can be pretty expensive! So if you can spare 3 nights or longer for a side trip out of Singapore, head out to Bangkok for a better value. There is fantastic shopping, food and vibrant nightlife, and all are a lot cheaper than Singapore. You can also consider Bali, which is just a couple of hours flight away. The beautiful scenery, temples & friendly people more then make up for longer flight time. If you prefer peace & quiet in Bali, stay in the Sanur area. If clubbing is your thing, stay at Seminyak or Kuta. Bali is definitely a good place to relax after your business trip to Singapore.

Not sure what you want to do on a side trip. But you could go to Bangkok (for food and shopping), its a 4 hours + flight from Singapore. Or Bali (from some relaxation), the neighbouring countries are quite near and convenient to explore or Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur / Penang / Malacca).

Alternatively, you could stay in Singapore after your business trip. There's tons to do here.

Enjoy your trip to Singapore =)

Try Kota Kinabalu. Off the regular tourist path, but plenty to do for 2-3 days and quite inexpensive. Also, there should be plenty of direct, inexpensive flights. Climb Mt Kinabalu, the highest mountain in South East Asia.

Flights from Singapore to Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia are all just about an hour. If you want to go by land, Tioman Island in Malaysia is a great option. You can take a bus and ferry over to the island, which has great places to go scuba/snorkeling or just relaxing on gorgeous beach.

The obvious two choices are Malacca or Penang since you have only two days and so you want places that are relatively compact and easy to explore.. the other places would require more time to fully enjoy.

Yoi could visit Malacca in Malaysia. A smaller place than Singapore, but culturally very interesting and a place with a great kitchen.
