Cameron, that's a tough one because there are different gradations of Mexican food in San Diego. For example, in Hillcrest there's Ortega’s, a Mexican Bistro which serves the best baja style lobster I've found in San Diego. Cantina Mayahuel in University Heights has great food and an even better tequila bar. Las Cuatro Milpas is a really great, very authentic, institution in Barrio Logan -- the locals flock there and they know good Mexican cuisine. The street tacos at MATADOR Mexican Grill in Linda Vista/Bay Park area are killer....and a good deal. For fish tacos, you probably can't do better than home-grown Rubio's. And, in North County, Fidel's Little Mexico or Tony's Jacal in Solana Beach are undiscovered gems. And I'm just getting started.

    Hope this helps.

There's a great place in Ocean Beach San Diego on Newport Ave. called Ortega’s, a Mexican Bistro. Go there on a Wednesday when the weekly farmer's market is in full swing and you can get a $4 Mexican "pancake" They have a setup right out front, frying up the homemade tortillas on the street. On any other day, the restaurant is charming and authentic- great service (which I find rare in San Diego)

For a few more dollars- and more funky check out Puesto Mexican Street Food either in La Jolla or in Seaport Village Pistachio salsa is amazing!

Ortega’s, a Mexican Bistro is great. A couple of blocks away, on Sunset, is Ranchos Cocina. They have great food and a nice Vegetarian selection as well. If you're willing to try something funky, check out Las Cuatro Milpas. It's amazing. Just lunch and a long wait, so if you don't want to wait, get there no later than 11am. But the wait is part of the fun. Order at the counter and grab a table in the tortilleria room. And watch out for the hot sauce. Super hot, and very good. And finally, for authentic Mexico City cuisine, our favorite place is Ranas Mexico City Cuisine. Amazing food.
