Restaurant & activities ideas for couples weekend getaway in San Diego

Weekend pre-birthday celebration for a more intimate couples time. Heard about the Coronado islands nearby? We both love active fun things and as well as trying new food (even molecular gastronomy). Any romantic dinner (seafood pref) recommendations ?

Most people confuse the Coronado Islands for Coronado Island and vice versa...

Coronado Island is connected to downtown San Diego by a huge bridge. The place to visit and dine is the Hotel Del Coronado. Very Historic. Very cool! (Very crowded!) Right on the beach! We love 1500 OCEAN at the Del. It is pricey but you get what you pay for! Great for a romantic dinner!

The Coronado Island are very small rocky islets (Too small for anyone to live there.) near San Diego, just over the border in Mexico. Easy dive boat trip from San Diego. Great place to swim with seals and sea lions! Great place to go for SCUBA diving!

Thank you for that clarification. I was getting confused reading yelp reviews and some articles. I'll be sure to check out 1500 OCEAN at the Del. High five! · (0 likelikes)

If you need a hotel in San Diego (but not on Coronado Island), I particularly like the Hotel Solamar, as for seafood dinner in the area, I think searsucker is a great spot. More lively and bustling than intimate, but great food and a good scene.

Coronado, huh? Depending on how you're getting around, you can park at the USS Midway Museum Ace Parking Lot for $10 or make your way via taxi/bus to the Broadway Pier and tour the museum, check out the Star of India, and stroll the harbor. When you're bored of that, catch the Flagship Cruises & Events ferry to Coronado, which costs about $8 round-trip and departs hourly. Once you're on the Coronado ferry landing, you can walk over and rent bikes at Bikes And Beyond then cruise the island. Check out Coronado Beach, the Hotel Del Coronado and its signature restaurant 1500 OCEAN for a romantic oceanfront dinner or Leroy's Kitchen & Lounge for casual Californian cuisine and craft beer and cocktails. Jeez, I sound like a commercial.

Catch the ferry back to San Diego and then find your way through the secret door to Vin De Syrah Spirit & Wine Parlor for wine flights, and finish the night with a spectacular view at Altitude Sky Lounge atop the Marriott in the Gaslamp.

Hiking at Torrey Pines State Park is great for a laid back adventure day. Parking can be a challenge, or just pay the $15 (I think) for the day. But it's so beautiful and an easy hike. Mount Soledad is also a fun lookout point, if it's a clear and not windy day.

Well, Lily, if you are looking for a romantic weekend in San Diego (good choice), I'm not sure that Coronado will satisfy your gastronomic desires. Coronado has some nice hotels (my favorite is the Loews Coronado Bay Resort) but for food, I might suggest elsewhere in San Diego.

Sushi Ota in Pacific Beach may have the best seafood in the area. If you like sushi, this place may be amongst the best on the West Coast, but reservations are essential. C Level on Harbor Island offers some great views of San Diego Bay along with nicely prepared foods, as does Island Prime. Sally's Seafood on the Water at the Hyatt also has great seafood with remarkable Bay views.

Up in La Jolla near Torrey Pines State Park there is A.R. Valentien at The Lodge at Torrey Pines that serves some of the best food in San Diego in a hotel and area that is drop dead gorgeous. It's not cheap, but the memories will last a lifetime. Afterwards (or before) take a hike in Torrey Pines State Park and enjoy some of the best views in the U.S.

For some of the freshest fish in Southern California, check out Point Loma Seafoods in Point Loma (you can take a half-day or full-day fishing trip from the same area and catch your own fish) or head up to Cardiff and grab some fresh fish from Rimel's Rotisserie just a stone's throw from the ocean.

Have a great time and enjoy San Diego. It really has a tremendous number of great places to swim, hike and eat along the ocean. You've chosen well!

It's incredibly beautiful to see the view of San Diego from Coronado Island! Rent a two-person bike, get tired, enjoy your wine in 'Village Pizzeria'.
