Leaves seem to change here sometime between late September to late October. Last year's peak was around the 1st & 2nd weeks of October. Surprisingly, I've noticed leaves in the city tend to change a week or so later than the ones immediately north along the Hudson Valley. Green in Greenwich Village, then hop a car and drive 20 minutes north into Westchester County and many of the trees are already in color.

To be safe, I'd plan a trip anytime around mid October. If you are a runner, there is nothing more iconic than a leaf-peeping run around the Central Park Loop. If you have the time, book a river day trip up the Hudson to Bear Mountain State Park and revel at the pretty leaves while drinking a stein of beer at the area's largest Oktoberfest :) I recommend Seastreak (departs from East River Ferry Terminal Wall Street/Pier 11) because their boats are faster and comfier than the Circle Line's.

If you are renting a car, you can drive into the Hudson Valley via the Taconic State Pkwy or into the Catskill Mountains via the New York State Thruway (I-87).

You can also take a MetroNorth train on the Hudson Line to stops like Garrison, Cold Spring, Beacon and Poughkeepsie, for a variety of activities. The Walkway Over the Hudson is a short walk from the Poughkeepsie Metro North train stationand gives an amazing view of the Hudson River.

If you are looking for leaf colors, mid to late October is ideal, but best is to go out of the city to see more trees! Hudson Valley is beautiful, for instance.

If you want nyc city attractions, I love mid September-- the weather is warm and sunny, kids are back in school so less crowded, generally a great time of year to visit the city.

The last two weeks of October and the first of November are generally the peak of foliage color change in New York City. It all depends on the weather thought.
