If you ask 100 New Yorker's that question you're going to get 100 different answers. That said, while some think that Lombardi's Pizza is the best, it is said to be the oldest Pizzeria in the city. It's terrific. Other people think that Grimaldi's Pizzeria is the best. You'll know when you're there because of the line. If you're not into waiting John's Pizzeria is a great choice, you won't be disappointed. Enjoy!

If you'd like to venture out of the city and into Brooklyn there are two spots that I'd recommend for a less authentic NY slice, but more hip experience. The first one is in Greenpoint and easily accessible by the Greenpoint Ave G stop - Paulie Gee's. The second is a little deeper into Brooklyn, in Bushwick, and easily accessible by the Morgan Ave L stop - Roberta's

I work near Grimaldi's Pizzeria and I'd say try to avoid it. It's definitely a tourist trap. I've never really felt the pies were all that special, and I'm not a huge fan of waiting on line to eat. If you do want the experience, I'd go a couple doors down to Juliana's Pizza . These are, supposedly, the original owners of Grimaldi's, and I have to admit, I like the service, the ambiance and the pizza (and cannoli!) much much better.

If you want a super authentic NY slice, go to Rosario Pizza on the LES on Orchard Street between Stanton and Houston. The owner, Sal, is just adorable and sometimes, if you ask really really sweetly, he might give you a free cannoli from the kitchen (don't tell him I told you)!

Definitely Joe's Pizza on Carmine for a Street Slice.

Joe's PizzaBut for a really great pie, there are two options if you are willing to venture to Brooklyn.

My favorite is Lucali. No sign, no menus, cash-only, BYOB. So fresh and delicious with a romantic atmosphere.

Another option that I love is Sottocasa on Atlantic Avenue. They have great pies, but also a killer wine selection and really friendly staff. Plus the BEST tiramisu. Go later if you want to avoid the family crowd.

There are a lot of Italian people on Staten Island, and we make some pretty decent pizza, in fact, the pizza here on SI is literally award-winning.

I suggest hopping on the ferry and doing a pizza crawl to Brother's Pizza on Forest Avenue, then up to mid-island for Villa Monte Pizzeria & Restaurant , which is a local family chain. Further down the island you can find my absolute favorite, Pino's Pizzeria -- the sauce there reminds me exactly of the sauce my grandmother used to make. And on your way home, don't miss Denino's Pizzeria Tavern , infamous for their thin-crust pies. Enjoy.

I would try Mariella Pizza near Gramercy Park. I went to high school about two blocks over and ate here about twice a week. Great pizza but not light. Also, it can be very hard to find a table if you go during lunch hour but that's true of just about every restaurant in the city. Also try Bravo Pizza in the Flatiron district. Much lighter than Mariella's but great. If you're further west, try Gotham Pizza in Chelsea. Really great, light pizza. Mariella's is the best of all of them. Bravo Pizza

If you would like an original Neapolitan Pizza (vs the New York Italian Pizza), would suggest you to stop by La Pizza Fresca Ristorante - it is a certified member of the worldwide "The True Neapolitan Pizza Association" (Associazione Verace Pizza napoletana,AVPN)

Great woodfire pizza's with a wonderful ambience. It is really close to Union Square restaurant and shopping district in New York City

    Co-ordinates: Subway: 4, 5, 6, N, R, L to 14th St/Union Square
A short walk from the Union Square or 23rd Street subways.

Alternatively, if you would like a "Market" experience, where you get to eat and buy anything Italian, would recommend " Eataly - lovely place where you can pick pastas, eat gelato / tiramisu besides your pizzas.

Famous Roio's Pizza (formerly Famous Ray's Pizza) has been a fixture at 465 Avenue of the Americas (corner of W 11th St.) in Greenwich Village since 1973. While the name has changed, the original management and pizza recipe have returned. Whenever I visit NYC, I go out of my way to have a slice (or two)at this Sixth Avenue landmark. Excellent!

Now that you have many alternatives for pizza, I will highly recommend an Italian restaurant (for a romantic or nice dinner) Maison 1700 Broadway, corner of 53rd & 7th, 212-757-2233. I will also recommend The Irish Pub , excellent appetizers and nice ambience, 837 7Ave, at 54th St. Enjoy it!!!
