Art in the City

I will be in NYC mid-November for a couple of days and I want to spend the brunt of my time visiting private art galleries and looking at art. What is the best neighborhood in Manhattan or Brooklyn to be surrounded by private art galleries and see a lot of good contemporary art?

I'd recommend staying in or around Chelsea - on the west side of Manhattan, in the west teens and 20's. Look for Agora Gallery, Luhring Augustine, Matthew Marks Gallery, and Gagosian Gallery.

Thursday night is the night many Chelsea (New York) galleries have their exhibition openings. Check http://www.artcards.cc/ for a comprehensive list of art events and openings throughout Manhattan and elsewhere. Also, check out the New Museum in the Bowery and MoMA PS1 in Queens if you're looking for contemporary art.MoMA PS1

The lower west side of Manhattan is where many of the great contemporary galleries are located. Check out David Zwirner Gallery, Lehmann Maupin and Gagosian Gallery
