Recommendations for one day tour or tour guide?

I'm going to be in Delhi (at a 4 star hotel) for 2 nights.  I won't have much time, and people have scared me about safety issues, so I would like a tour or tour guide.  I don't want to pay a fortune, and I don't want something over-commercial - where they drag you to a rug factory and take you for a tour group lunch.  I would love some suggestions.  Thanks.

Back in December 2010, we did a customized Delhi day tour which included a rickshaw and car, seeing sights in Old and New Delhi which was fantastic, with Deepa Krishnan at Delhi Magic, deepa@delhimagic.com: (cost was Rs 6500 or $108 USD for 2 people):

--Morning coverage: Humayun's Tomb, Red Fort, Jama Masjid, Chandni Chowk(cycle rickshaw ride), Connaught Place (drive through)

--Afternoon coverage: Gandhi Memorial School/Raj Ghat/Shantivan Garden/shopping at the Karnataka

Exploring Delhi was an incredible experience and our guide was excellent, with just two people. We had great conversations and asked many questions about the history and culture. Enjoy your trip!

I think the Ho Ho bus in Delhi would be good for you. It is run by the government but is decent in service and as you are in a group you should be OK. http://hohodelhi.com/ they have various tours for different parts of Delhi so you can pick and choose.

The tours cover major attractions like Red Fort, Old Delhi, India Gate, Rashtrapati Bhavan, National Museum etc. and there will be a qualified guide on the bus.

There are also specialized food / and heritage walks in Delhi organized by special passionate folks but they are mostly on weekends and I am not sure if you are coming on a weekend here. You are welcome to send follow up questions with specifics and I will answer them.

BE SAFE!! Feels weird to emphasize but be safe, try to roam around but with a guy along with you. There are a lot of traditional places that you'll like. Find those on any website. Hauz Khas village is a good hang out place, very frequent with foreigners so you'll feel comfortable. Luckily I work here only lol. And don't be dependent on guides, sometimes even they are suspicious. WIsh you happy journey. Keep tripping !!

I think you should take cab provided by your own hotel where will stay. It's true Delhi is not safe but late night(after 11:00 pm at isolated places) not during daytime. Always ask for help from either traffic police or Delhi police. Never try to ask from auto rickshaw driver or people. They might be dangerous. and just regarding attractive places in Delhi, below is given the list you must see:

    Just follow sequence:Start with

    1.Red Fort

    2. Raj Ghat and Akshardham Temple

    3. Humayun's Tomb

    4. Lotus Temple

    5.Qutab Minar

    6. Hauz khas village

    7. Connaught Place

If you are intersted in shopping Mall, you must see below given both mall

    1. DLF Emporio (Vansant Kunj)

    2. Select City Walk (Saket)

Don't waste time in vising places which is of no importance. If you get time after that, than you can try other things.

I hope this will help you.

Ho Ho bus is fine. Check out also the numerous Delhi Tourism bus tours they arrange. Both half day and full day tours. This covers most of the Delhi sights. Need any further details, you can post the queries.

Check this out. its a bus service run by the government and is pretty safe. And you would actually have a lot of say in where you want to stop and visit and skip the boring ones,
