Kid-friendly things to do in Napa

My husband and I don't want to be the selfish parents who drag their kids wine tasting all day during our family excursion to Napa from SF (though that sounds mighty tempting!), so we'd like to have some kid-friendly options lined up.  Are there any fun kids attractions in the area?  We're only here for a day or two (still deciding), so maybe a couple fun things to fill in the gaps.

While Napa, and the surrounding "Wine Country" towns might not be the first destination you would think of as "kid friendly," there is lots for kids to do in this beautiful area. Here are a few things:

    • Hot Air Ballon ride over the valley with Napa Valley Balloons, Inc.
    • Bike around Napa Valley with Napa Valley Bike Tours & Rentals
    • Ace wizard Harry Potter himself couldn’t have done a better job of turning trees into stone than Mother Nature did at The Petrified Forest (website). Hike through the woods and learn about how water and silica transform wood into rock.
    • The di Rosa Preserve houses 2,000 works of art by more than 800 artists. The preserve is located on 217 acres in Napa Valley. (un)Natural is an exhibition of works of art interpreting nature and created by Bay Area artists.
    • Kids and adults alike are fascinated by the Old Faithful Geyser of California (website), which erupts every 30 minutes or so like its more famous cousin in Wyoming. There is also a petting zoo with goats, sheep, and llamas to occupy kids while they are waiting for all the action.
    • Napa Valley Wine Train (website) is kid-friendly on selected Family Date Nights, offered twice a month during the school year and on summer Sundays. One child per paid adult travels free (additional per child fee $15), entertained by a professional care provider in a separate car with their own meal, games, and movies. Meanwhile, the adults have an uninterrupted dinner! Ages 3-12 only.
    • Wineries like Ceja Vineyards and Imagery are family friendly and offer Bocce Ball courts.
    • The best place to play in Napa is Playground Fantastico (website), an aptly-named park designed by kids with the help of playground architecture firm Leathers and Associates. The different-themed structures invite children’s imaginations to run wild, as well as their little legs.
    • Jelly Belly Tours - its close to Napa

Incredible first answers, Valerie! I live in the area and still need to check out a few of these places! By the way, I'm a community manager here and I've helped you highlight the places in your answer on a map! In the future, you can do this yourself as you answer a question by simply typing the @-symbol followed by the name of the place. Take a look at your map next to your answer :) · (1 likelikes)

Lucky for you, a lot of wineries are actually very family-friendly! On top of being in gorgeous buildings, a lot of them also have vast outdoors areas that kids love to run around in.To start off, here are a couple of wineries that are especially family-friendly:

Here's another wine-related activity: on Sundays during the summer, the famous Napa Valley Wine Train actually has Family Fun Night, where all the kids get to ride in a separate car, have their own meal and be entertained with kid activities under the supervision of caretakers. All that while the adults get to enjoy their own meal and wine in another train while taking in the Napa Valley sights.

In Calistoga, there are two very family-friendly attractions: the Old Faithful Geyser of California and Petrified Forest.

And I'm not sure how far you wanted to travel, but in Santa Rosa, there's a safari that kids love, and in Fairfield, you can visit the Jelly Belly Factory and go on a tour. If you decide to do the latter, make sure you pick up a bag of Belly Flops. Those are the Jelly Beans that are sold in bulk at a discounted rate because they're misshapen :P
