Most pet-friendly airline?

Okay, animal lovers... you know who you are! What are the best airline experiences you've had with your pet?

From bookings to the actual flight, what airline made you and your pet most comfortable? I've recently started flying with my dog and I want to make sure I'm choosing the most pet-friendly airlines out there. I'd love to hear your stories!

I actually work for Southwest Airlines. And as long as your dog can fit in the pet carrier you'll be good. Now it has to be able to move around inside the pet carrier. But if you don't have one you can always purchase the carrier at the airport. They're $45 and you know you'll be good to fit it under the seat in front of you.. It's $95 each way for your pet to travel. But at least it's with you in the aircraft rather than in cargo. It does count as one of your bags that you are taking on board so just take note of that! Hope that helps!!

Cats have the same policy! Just make sure they have enough room to move around. I think you can have up to two cats and dogs in 1 carrier. They have to be the same pet though in one carrier! · (1 likelikes)

Thank you, Elaina. I appreciate it. That's a cheaper fare than some others I've been looking at too. · (1 likelikes)

Southwest has the cheapest "dog fare" I've found at $95 each way. American's is at $125 each way I believe.

    Best tips I have?

Choose a window seat near the back and you can usually get away with unzipping the carrier so your pooch can at least poke its head out and see whats going on.

The later the flight the better. I took a red eye once and when we were in the air and the lights were dimmed I pulled my pup out of his carrier and draped a blanket over me so he could snuggle in my lap unnoticed.

You can also look into "service dog" options. If they're registered as a service dog the pet fees are usually waived and you can keep your pets outside of their carrier during the flight.

If you plan on giving your dog any medication to help keep them calm try it out on them before your trip. I found out the hard way that Benadryl makes my pooch WIRED... there were a lot of annoyed passengers on the flight :o/

    United Airlines - $125

This animal-friendly airline allows almost every type of small animal to board their planes. As long as the animal is small enough, you also can bring him in-cabin with you, storing him in an appropriate holder under the seat in front of you. The only caveat? Certain times of the year carry flight restrictions for certain breeds. Be sure to check their website for more info and to learn about their PetSafe program.

    Alaska Air - $100

Alaska Air, like United, are very pet friendly.

    JetBlue - $100

This is one airline where your pet can travel in style. The airline provides a free pet-friendly travel guide (specific to your destination) once you land. On top of all that, if you fly JetBlue with your pet often enough, you'll rack up points toward free airfare.

    Delta - $125

Delta offers a Delta Pet First service, giving pet owners several options for traveling with pets.

    AirTran - $69

AirTran Is Best For Budget Conscious Consumers

AirTran won the category for best for budget-conscious consumers. They allow small dogs, cats and birds to fly inside the cabin for only $69 each way.

Like Amanda said, getting your dog as a service dog for a physical disability is very helpful. But, you do need to have a physical disability. You could also have him or her as an emotional support dog. This is for emotional issues (ie. stress, anxiety, etc) This can be done by seeing a therapist whom will write you a letter stating that you need your dog for travel. This letter is requested by most airlines when booking your flight. You will also need to have this letter for TSA. Don't be fooled by all of the websites out there that say you can pay a fee for a vest...you need a letter! (My dog is an emotional support dog for anxiety.)

There are a few European Airlines that are very pet-friendly. So in case you don't fly to/from or within the USA, the following list might help:

I can highly recommend Lufthansa(headquarter at FrankfurtFrankfurt Airport). They even have an Animal Lounge at Frankfurt Airport in case you have a longer stopover.

Swiss Air (headquarter at Zurich Airport is also know for their pet-friendly service and like Lufthansa you are allowed to take small pets into the cabin.

Turkish Airline (headquarter at Istanbul Ataturk Airport) also allows small pets into the cabin but they are more expensive than Swiss and Lufthansa.

If you want to get a good overview of prices and methods of transporting pets on all major airlines, the website dog jaunt has an updated and comprehensive list.
