Great question! I would say Fountain Restaurant at Fortnum & Mason for sure. It's an absolutely lovely setting and an easy place to sit at the bar by yourself (which I've done). If you like martinis, there's a bartender there named Atilla and he makes a great one.

image from frenchblue-frenchblue.blogspot.comI would also try Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese. They have a bunch of tables downstairs for two so there are usually lots of people eating solo there. Ye Olde Cheshire Cheeseimage from flickr.comThe George is also an easy place to grab a bite/drink on your own and the fish & chips there are great. The George

Bocca Di Lupo in Soho - the bar overlooks the chefs cooking - amazing & the best seats in the house. They have lots of small plates which are perfect for a single person so you can try several.

2 Location for Italian tappas: Polpo (near Liberty of London off Carnaby Street) and Polpo near covent garden.

The meatballs are over the top! no reservations but worth the que.

There's also Hawksmoor Steak - great bar and has a 2nd location on Regent Street too. $$$$ but steak is amazing. The burger is also very good.

    Have a great trip!

What good question! I often dine solo when researching restaurants and I think it is something that most travellers end up doing regularly but hardly ever exchange advice on. Thanks for starting this thread!

So down to business, a few of my favourite solo dinning BARS:

    • Zoilo in Marylebone is one of my favourite haunts. It's a small restaurant serving exquisite Argentinian tapas and it has a welcoming long bar where you can interact with other diners or the bar tenders.
    • Bentley's Oyster Bar & Grill is a London institution tucked away in an alleyway off of Picadilly. They serve a full menu at the bar (from breakfast to dinner) which is manned by some seriously good bartenders.
    • Polpo has a three different locations in London and all are condussive to enjoying some excellent Southern Italian small plates at the bar
    • Hawksmoor steakhouse also has a few locations, my favourite bar is at the Seven Dials branch. Actually, the bar menu is so yumi I often order from it when dinning in the main restaurant.
    • The Gilbert Scott bar at the St Pancras Hotel has a small menu with staples such as fishcakes and burgers. The food here is very decent but the real reason to visit is the stunning bar hall, located in the old St Pancras ticket office. A real local favourite!
    • St John is a consistent favourite among London gourmands. The bar at Smithfields serves a seasonal menu to be washed down with a good beer.
    • Pollen Street Social is always busy and lively. The long bar has a reduced menu of small plates, tapas and sharing platters and is one of my go to lunch spots
    • The Bleeding Heart Tavern is a recent discovery. I have only tried the restaurant food which is very nice but assume that the next door Tavern is just as good: pub food with a French twist.
    • Boundary Rooftop is a good summer option. Located in Shoreditch, it is a lovely alfresco option with rooftop views across East London and the City skyline.
    • For views, the bar at Hutong in the Shard and at Sushisamba in the Heron building are pretty hard to beat

Hope you enjoy your trip to London!

I depends where in London you will be, but wagamamas does great noodles and oriental dishes, I often see single people there, and thats a chain restaurant. If you are near Pizarro on Bermondsey street, near London bridge, recommend it. Small family run tapas place. Eating at the bar is all you can do.

I'd say that you should definitely try Quo Vadis. They have great food, nice wine, and they're a historical landmark. Plus, when you're done with dinner you'll be in SoHo, a prime part of London to enjoy the evening. However, I suggest that you sit at a table, rather than at the bar to eat - even if dining alone (which is more of an American tradition).

You'll feel comfortable at any of the Taylor Walker owned pubs around town. There are over 100 of them. Be sure to visit their Salisbury pub located at 90 St Martins Lane, Covent Garden, London.

I visit London by myself frequently and I've never had a problem getting a table. No reason why you should be relegated to the bar unless of course that's where you want to be!
