Seoulsfgirl :)

San Francisco, California

What is the quintessential food that is unique to these states?

I'm driving cross country and I was wondering the name of the restaurant to go to or type of food to look out for each state.  I will be going through Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee, Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, and Wisconsin.  Thanks in advance!

The quintessential Indiana food would have to be the breaded tenderloin sandwich. I grew up just outside of Boston but when I became a Hoosier about 9 years ago, the breaded tenderloin sandwich was new to me. My first was at Nick's Kitchen which I learned later is the place the sandwich was created. I currently live in Indianapolis, one of the most underrated cities in the country. The local food scene in Indy is fantastic and the breaded tenderloin sandwich pops up in various iterations. Some aim to be the largest, others focus on the quality and source of the ingredients. my local favorites include Union Jack Pub, Moe & Johnny's, and Plump's Last Shot. Enjoy!

Oh, one other menu item that seemed new to me is the Indiana Sugar Cream Pie. Homemade is best, but if you don't have a local Hoosier sugar cream pie fairy at your service, head over to Locally Grown Gardens. He makes all of his pies fresh and they are quite honestly slices of sweet heaven.

I may have to get both tomorrow.

It's hard to mess up a breaded tenderloin sandwich, so if you don't end up near one of my suggested restaurants, you will find the sandwich on menus all over the state. It's fried pork at its best! · (0 likelikes)

Instead of posting a list of foods, here's a tip from my friend who has a blog called "She Ate What?": When you go to a restuarant, don't open the menu -- just tell the waiter to bring you the specialty of the house.

You would have to take a little detour but there's a place in Athens (Ohio) (in the middle of nowhere) that has the best friend chicken on the planet. Not good fried chicken, not fried chicken that's in contention for being the best in the world, THE BEST fried chicken that's ever been. It's called Miller's Chicken.

    Now I want a piece.

Seoulsfgirl, make sure to stop in Wisconsin for deep-fried cheese curds.

Yeah, it sounds weird, but they're amazing! If you swing thru Milwaukee, make sure to stop by Milwaukee Brat House. Great little pub and purveyor of fine sausages. After lunch, stop by Usinger'sto see where your lunch came from. It's quintessential Wisconsin food.
