Recommendations in Tuscany's Val d'Orcia region?

My husband and I will be spending about 5 days in Tuscany's stunning Val d'Orcia region. We will be staying in Montepulciano but we will have a rental car so we can explore the nearby hillside towns and wineries.

We're looking for restaurants and winery recommendations that we might not learn about on our own, as well as any towns/attractions that might be worth a day trip for.

Any and all recommendations welcome!

This region is simply heaven. I did an incredible day trip two years ago and this is what we did:

Pecorino Cheese Farm, Pienza, Montepulciano, lunch at Poggio Etrusco di Sheldon Johns Pamela, wine cellar tour and tasting of Vino Nobile

The lunch at Poggio Etrusco was unbelievable. Truly. The cheese tasting in Pienza was at a sustainable cheese farm owned by swiss cheese makers. Heaven.

We did this tour with Simply Firenze-- Katharine was our guide: info@simplyamalfi.com

hallo, i live in val d'orcia and if you wont have a good wine tasting i suggest you to go in Montalcino and taste the Brunello of Montalcino to Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona tel. 0577835616.

Another great Place is Pienza, one of the old city of the pope where you can find a great cheese. For me the best is ERNELLO http://www.degustazioni.net/

you can go also in Monticchiello a beautiful place near Pienza where every year all the people who leave there make a teather show every night for 20 days and there you can go to eat to the restaurant LA PORTABagno Vignoni

After this you can go in San Quirico d'Orciawhere you can find a beautiful church call the Collegiata end also a beautiful garden call Orti Leonini

At least i suggets you to take a thermal bath in Bagno Vignoni (where i live, in the photo you can see the thermal place in the centre of Bagno Vignoni ). Here in bagno vignoni you can find thermal water, five restaurant, three bar and many othe thing.

    sorry for my english

Florence is worth a day of your trip if you have never been. You must explore the wineries in Montalcino. Also visit Pienza and Sienna. Both nearby. Both worth it. And in Montepulciano, my favorite wine store is on a side street off the main square. It has a lovely and ancient wine cave. You'll find it!!

    Ciao Serena

it's a very nice choice. Good idea to rent a car, otherwise without is impossible to visit it.
