Free things to do in Istanbul?

How can I get the most out of Istanbul for free or on a low budget? I love being outdoors, music & film, museums, and culture...so pretty much it all :)

There are so many things to see and do in Istanbul, just walking through parts of the city are amazing. For a free activity I would suggest going to Gulhane Park.

Istanbul is such a great city for free things! Here are my favorites that never disappoint visitors.

İstanbul Modern is free every Thursday and an awesome new museum to the city. If you're into photography and any kind of cinema this is a great place to get lost for a few hours. It's huge.

On Sundays, there is an open air market in Ortaköy that's a lot of fun. It will give you a great view and experience of the local culture, and it's free :) The Spice Bazaar should definitely not be missed either. Even as a local I still think it's the coolest thing to do in Istanbul.

Spice BazaarA great place to get free scenic views of the city is Süleymaniye Mosque and Complex. It's really pretty up top. The Blue Mosque is free as well!

    Have fun

There are a few things you can do for free like:

    visit SALT Galata and Beyoğlu.

walk the labyrinth of streets of the Spice Bazaar and Grand Bazaar and take in the street life.

visit the magnificent mosques like the Blue Mosque, Süleymaniye Mosque and Complex and Rüstem Pasha Mosque.

Roam Galata Kulesi (Galip Dede Street) and watch musicians busk.

Roam Istiklal Avenue and explore the shops and arcades on the side streets.

Pera Museum and İstanbul Modern have free entry days.

Head to a rooftop cafe and drink a cay (black tea) - it's cheap!

Walk Gulhane Park towards the Bophorus and take a seat to enjoy the view at the eastern end of the park.

Explore Tophane neighbourhood that's got art galleries.

Take the ferry from Eminönü (europe) to Kadıköy (asia) or Karaköy to Kadikoy and explore the markets there. Ferry ride costs $2.

Go photograph Balat/Fener Kalamış Cd neighbourhood.

Have cay at Pierre Loti Tepesi Tesisleri.

Hope that's a start. People watching with cay is an art called keyfi in Turkey - enjoy :-)
