Fun outdoor activities in Denver?

I'll be visiting a friend who recently moved to Denver in the spring. We're both city girls who love the outdoors, so we want to take advantage of the outdoor activities that Denver has to offer. Where and what are some fun ones? I'm thinking scenic drives, hikes, or any other outdoorsy things you can recommend. Thanks!

A really pretty place to hike at would be Hanging Lake, it has waterfalls and isn't too extreme. You can also find a lot of places to rent a Jeep and go on four wheeling tours that go by some of the old mining areas.

When exactly will you be visiting? The snow in the mountains lasts into the summer (some ski resorts are open until June or July), so if you want to go hiking in May or June, it's probably best to stay around the front range. I live in Boulder (less than an hour from Denver) and can recommend some hikes around here if you're interested. Trail Ridge Road through Rocky Mountain National Park is the classic Colorado drive, but it closes for winter and I'm not sure when it reopens. The drive from Golden (Colorado) to Boulder is right along the foothills and is also very pretty. There are lots of trailheads where you can stop and walk around for awhile (like the photo below). Mount Sanitas Trailhead is pretty and very sunny, so it's less snowy/icy/muddy than many other trails in the spring.Boulder

I'd head straight out to Dillon (Colorado). All the hiking, mountain biking, watersports and what not you could possible want. There's also plenty of great food and nightlife in the area. Frisco (Colorado) and Breckenridge are good fun, too.

You will need to be sure to check out Red Rocks Amphitheatre, people like to gather during the day to hike, run the stairs, sight see, etc..

Depending on what part of town you are in Pearl St & LoDo have a great outdoor vibe as well. Tons of great spots to grab food or a drink.

Your best bet for hiking might be Red Rocks Amphitheatre. Spring hiking is usually pretty icy & muddy but the trails around Red Rocks are lower elevation and get more sun so they might be good. Plus the scenery is beautiful. Red Rocks Amphitheatre

If you want to do the city/outdoorsy thing you could pick up a coffee at Ink Coffee and enjoy a sunny walk through Commons Park and Confluence Park. You can sit and watch the kayakers practice near Confluence when the weather is nice. If you need any outdoor gear the downtown REI is huge and will have everything you could possibly need. Then depending on your mood you can pick up ice cream at Little Man Ice Cream or enjoy cocktails and city views on the rooftop patio at Linger a one time mortuary turned trendy restaurant. If you are looking for outdoor activities close to Denver, Lookout Mountain in Golden has some nice and scenic trails.

You can also do some good walking/jogging in Washington Park and then head over for a drink at Max's Gill & Grill for a cocktail. I love this restaurant/bar!
