Pecan Lodge Lockhart Smokehouse for BBQ. Tex Mex near downtown is a little trickier. Maybe Mr Mesero or Pepe & Mito's Mexican Cafe

For texmex here are a few places that are more uptown and a bit further, but an easy cab ride from downtown.

    • Mi Cocina. One of the nicer options for texmex in Dallas as I recall.
    • Chuy's. it's sloppy but good. Plan on drinking a few margaritas to relax and fit in.
    • Javier's Gourmet Mexicano. Not sure this is technically "texmex" but damn it's good. Been there forever. Plan on eating meat. There is more taxidermy in here than you'll find in most Mexican restaurants... you won't forget you're in texas.

For BBQ, I always enjoyed Peggy Sue BBQ because it was right across the street from SMU where i attended classes (occasionally) but it's a drive from downtown so probably outside your comfort zone.

Having lived in DFW for 30 years, we love Spring Creek BBQ. Try to find one of their locations. Sonny Bryan's would be a good second choice. · (0 likelikes)

Check out Smoke. They do a lot of open fire cooking and it is fantastic. Brisket is a must try.

Who is that lunatic who recommended El Fenix. No, don't go there, trust me. Pepe's & Mito's Mexican Cafe is a good suggestion, and Ojeda's is classic.

El Fenix Restaurant is a GREAT family owned Dallas Tex Mex spot. My mother has been going their since she was a kid, and it's a place that our family loves. You can walk there in 10 minutes from most any building in downtown (as I did whenever I worked there) and it's located right next to Victory Park. Another place that my family has been going for over 50 years is Sonny Bryan's Smokehouse (2202 Inwood, Dallas, TX 75235) in the medical district. It's about a 10 minute drive from downtown, but it is well worth it. Hope you enjoy some good eats while you're in D-Town!

El Fenix? Try Ojeda's. El Fenix would be like eating a Mexican tv dinner! :) · (0 likelikes)
