  • "What should my fiance and I do on a day trip in Brussels?"

Kyle Turner

Chicago, Illinois

What should my fiance and I do on a day trip in Brussels?

In Paris for a week and would like to take a day trip on a friday morning to Brussels. Will be there for roughly 5-7 hours. What can we do to make the most of our short time without feeling harried or rushed? Must haves: beer and waffles.

Thanks!

Hey! I've been living in brussels since I was born and I would highly recommend some areas to visit! Since I am a student and on a low budget I like to walk around the city rather than pay for the transport. I very often spend some time around Avenue Louise where the nicest clothes stores are. (there is a metro and a tram station which stops right there or Place Stéphanie which is literally a few steps from Louise). I usually then walk down to the Place Poelaert where there's the Law Courts of Brussels, there's an amazingly beautiful view point from there, and I like to drink a beer with my friends there (I usually bring my own beer I buy in the supermarket). The best to do from there is to take the Ascenseur des Marolles, it's an elevator right at the view point which brings you down the the Marolles, once of Brussels'oldest area. There is not much to shop at there but it's beautiful, and has tons of old antique shops. I then cntinue walking town to the Mont des Arts which is also a beautiful view point, with a public park (it is very close the the BOZAR, brussel's art museum). From there you can then within a few steps walk to the famous Grand Place, my favourite place in Brussels! I would highly recommend this area to drink a beer (the Delirium Cafe , Brussel's most famous café). So this is my routine on weekends, I myself love waffles and must say that you can get them anywhere in Brussels around those areas. Don't be affraid to buy one in a Waffle truck, there are usually very good! The waffle stores around the Grand Place are however probably more expensive since it is very touristic, and you would probably pay more! I usually buy waffles at Place Stephanie in a truck or at Louise :)

It's been a few years since I was there, but I thoroughly enjoyed how "wander" friendly Brussels was. It's a city that almost forces you to get lost! For a short amount of time, head right to the Grand Place and spend your time in the neighborhood around it. Make sure to get the liege waffles (snack) and mussels (lunch).

Brussels is kind of a dud, I would do Bruges instead. Same food & drink but less dirty city.
