Valerie Fidan

San Francisco, California

Must eat in Boston? And, where?

I will be in Boston with my husband tomorrow until Wednesday. (It's our first time.) We love food! Any suggestions on restaurants? Or even cheap eats? Must eat? (We'll be staying at the Revere Hotel...in an around the neighborhood would be ideal but willing to travel across town for good food.) Thanks!

One of the best restaurants in the city is No.9 Park, which is a walk across the Common from your hotel. It's awesome, but super spendy. jm Curley is a bit closer, much cheaper, and has a good beer list, interesting mixed drinks, and great food.

Accessible by the T are Island Creek Oyster Bar (Green Line) and The Merchant (Orange Line). Island Creek is great for seafood - wonderful oysters and cool vibe. Definitely should see if there are reservations available - not sure what it's like on weekdays. The Merchant is good for a casual meal and had an extensive cocktail, beer, and wine menu. Ostra is also supposed to be amazing and right near your hotel - not cheap but apparently worth the money (eating there this Friday so cannot comment yet). You should definitely check out the North End if you can make it there, it has a great European vibe. Have eaten Parla Restaurant and it was delicious.

    http://www.bostonmagazine.com/restaurants/article/2014/10/27/50-best-restaurants-in-boston-2014/

This is a well done list that JUST came out this month (Nov '14).

If you only had one meal in Boston, I might recommend Alden & Harlow in Harvard Square or Ribelle in Brookline.

Not a lot of good food in the Back Bay, but closest to your hotel is Erbaluce.

If money is no object, then Clio Restaurant or O Ya Restaurant.

My personal favorite is Toro, which is a high energy, inventive tapas restaurant run by Ken Oringer, who is arguably Boston's best chef/restauranteur.

If you're looking for seafood, Row 34, Island Creek Oyster Bar, B&G Oysters, or Neptune Oyster are the spots.

PS - Avoid Faneuil Hall or the touristy seafood restaurants. The North End is fun, but the best Italian food is elsewhere, at Giulia or Sportello.

The oldest Italian restaurant (although several claim this, I believe) is Jeveli's Restaurant. My husband and I ate here on our first trip and had such an absolutely lovely experience, the location is beautiful, the staff was kind, helpful and fun and we met a couple from England dining next to us and ended up having so much fun chatting with them. The food was spectacular. And I highly recommend the lemoncello to end the evening.

Barking Crab is a blast too! Such a great vibe, right on the water.

Faneuil Hall is amazing for lunch! Don't miss out on the selection of food, and enjoy a bite from more than one stall!

Check out Erbaluce for dinner and possibly Finale for dessert, both near where you're staying. If you're looking for some cheap/quick options unique to Boston, consider Uburger, Boloco, or B.Good. I'm also a fan of Yankee Lobster in the Seaport/Innovation District if you're looking for some good, casual seafood (great lobster bisque, too).

"Tasty Burger" in the Fenway/Kenmore neighborhood is highly recommended for a cheap eat. It is a short train or taxi ride from the Revere Hotel Boston Common.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Island Creek Oyster Bar has phenomenal Oysters, a must try in Boston.

Must visit Faneuil Hall - food courts , shops, at the waterfront in Boston. Beautiful New England Aquarium. Can walk to all.

At Faneuil Hall, there is a very old restaurant called Durgin-Park - 340 Faneuil Hall Market Pl. - opened in 1800's where sailors would go when they came ashore- ( before there was a market here). Famous for roast beef- Boston landmark - communal seating on long tables- New England style food-chowders, broiled meats, - surly attitude waitresses. Groucho Marx would go on Johnny Carson and say he would go there just to bug he waitresses.
