From a weather perspective avoid sultry summer and bitter winter. The most pleasant weather is September and May.

for crowds you have to avoid all of the chinese holidays as it is crazy crowded. You will need to look at the calendar for the specific year as some of the holiday dates are based on the lunar calendar.

for September I would suggest squeezing a trip between the Mid Autumn festival (lunar based) and the beginning of one of the golden weeks on October 1(roman based)

for May I would suggest squeezing a trip between labor day May 1 (roman based) and the dragon boat festival (lunar based)

Great advice! Very comprehensive. Having lived just outside Beijing for a year, I agree! Sep and May are great times to be in Beijing. · (0 likelikes)

I live in Beijing and I think September and October(except from 1st to 7th,because that is the National Holiday and many visitors from other provinces come to the capital) is the best time to visit. The weather is cool and students' vacation ends.

As to the weather, autumn(from the end of August to the end of October) is the best time to visit Beijing. But there are huge people during the time of Chinese national holiday(usually from October 1 to 7 or more). From this point of view, before or after Chinese national holiday is better.

September would be best of the year. Not too windy cold, or too hot. You see a lot of color changes of trees in the historic sites.

Late September or mid-October is the best time for Beijing. Weather is lovely and you might even get a few blue sky days! Just make sure you avoid the first week of October, aka Golden Week, because it's a national public holiday -- which will mean more local tourists at various attractions.
