The two best places to stay would probably be Sukhumvit or Khao San Road. Khao San is going to be closer to the historic areas and is going to have lots of backpackers and nightlife/night markets.

Sukhumvit is a bit nicer/cleaner and has more shopping.

Agoda.com seems to be the best place to get a room and usually has the best prices.

    Happy travels!

Old town is the most interesting.

Tha Tian Market area, along Chao Praya River, near Wat Phoand Grand Palace.

Wat Suthat and The Giant Swingarea, surrounded by royal temples, monuments and local shop houses.

Thanon Pra Arthit area, near Khao San Road

Hotels: VILLA PHRA SUMEN BANGKOK HOTEL, Chern hotel, Inn a day for example.

For urban, Ratchaprasong Junction and Sukhumvitarea are recommended.
