Best off the beaten path bars?

My boyfriend, roommate and I are going to Amsterdam on an EF trip and we want to make the most of our night time in the city. We don't want to go to standard bars in the center city. We are cheap and going on a backpacker budget.

Café Brecht is worth a visit, it's a little speakeasy on the southern edge of the city centre, always mostly locals, and a really nice atmosphere. You could also check out Brouwerij Troost which is in De Pijp, it's a microbrewery which also serves good food - the beer here is cheap compared to most of Amsterdam and the tourist count is close to zero. A few more off the top of my head:

    Brouwerij 't IJ
    Brouwerij de Prael
    Café Mankind

A bit alternative but very off the beaten track, located in the west is De Nieuwe Anita www.denieuweanita.nl and you could always hang out and have a picknick in the Westerpark

Amsterdam Roest B.V. is an urban beach bar with swings, sand and stuff to play on. It's a great place to hang out and chill on sunny days sippin' drinks, beer, wine or other, and while away the hours.

It's a little hard to find because it's in an old industrial area in the eastern docklands of Amsterdam. It's well off the beaten path so it's not touristy and and the Amsterdam crowd is pretty eclectic so chances are whoever you are you'll fit in. They have many events here as well (brunches, markets, dj nights) so it is worth checking online to see what is on ..

For cocktails, I would hit HPS - it's a great bar with great drinks. Another cocktail place is Bar Oldenhof For food/beers and a view of the river Café-restaurant De Ysbreeker is a great choice. A bit more out of the way is Cafe Hesp - authentic brown bar on the river with great terrace and beer selection. Also more central on a quiet section of the canal is Proeflokaal Arendsnest has the best selection of Dutch beers.

The important thing is that you don't beat or get beaten up on the path :p

I asked locals where they'd go for a beer. Locals in Amsterdam are always happy to help. Wonderful people.
