Since 4th grade when i did a country report on Peru, I've wanted to go here. btw, Peru is a great choice for a 4th grader because you get to say Titicaca out loud in front of everyone.

A short walk from my house :) our little hostel doesn't get many guests, but the ones we do get enjoy a nice Peruvian family meal and local knowledge. We're very lucky to live where we do.

Two things I learned while in Peru: Make sure to bring CRISP NEW FRESH bank bills, otherwise banks in Peru will not exchange them. Also, bring bug spray with a high amount of deet, I had something that had 20% deet and bugs just landed on it :o

If all in your group are in great shape, you could consider to take the Inka Trail. It is a great trekking experience and at the end you will be enter Machu Picchu from a diferent prespective than the regular tourist.
