Don't take a Gondola ride from the Main Channel. They're much nicer on the smaller canals or away from Mark's Square.

i loved taking a gondola ride through venice! i had one of those moments where you can't believe you are actually in Italy on a gondola...definitely a highlight and not to miss!

Not only are these gondola rides romantic, they are also functional. Venice is really a collection of little islands and these canals are still used to this day to transport goods.

Our American born and raised (from an Italian family) Gondolier stopped us on a bridge in Venice and said he'd give us a free ride if my sister was 18, she was. He backed off his promise but gave us a discount, however then ended up singing"Sweet Child of Mine" to us the whole ride.
