Somehow every time I've made this drive I've screwed up and ended up driving at night...and yet somehow it was still stunning. Not a ton of diversity in it (not like you'll be going through lots of towns or residential areas), but it's still gorgeous.
PCH for me is home. Yet every time I drive it, I catch my breath at its beauty, changeable nature (in color, sounds, reflections) and true majesty. It is practically in my back yard but something I never take for granted.
This gorgeous area is located far north in the rugged peninsulas of Scotland and originally navigated by Nordic Vikings. Did someone say Vikings? Rugged? Yes. I like that.
This is one that I don't believe I've stopped at, but if you're having a casual drive around to Hilo, it may be a nice stop. It's just outside of Hilo.
Grab a freshly baked pastry and a hot cup of coffee at Grandma's Maui Coffee House. The coffee is grown, harvested and roasted by the staff. Check out the 100-plus-year-old roaster.

Easy drive from the Mauna Kea. One of the more beautiful views on the Big Island. Take highway 270 until it ends. There is a small car park where you can take in the view. If you want some exercise, there is a good hike down the valley to the black sand beach at the bottom. The drive out there is interesting... you go through a couple of small Hawaiian towns (Hawi is an interesting place with art galleries, etc.). If you do this, on the way back from the lookout, instead of taking the 270 back along the coast, when you enter Hawi, make a left on either the Kohala Mountain Road or Highway 250 (they merge a couple of mile from the turnoff from the road through town), and take that to Waimea (then you can take the 19 right down from Waimea to the Mauna Kea). This is a great little drive... you drive through rolling hills and ranches with views out to the Pacific and Maui. We stumbled across this route and loved it. Totally different than the drive along the coast.…see moresee less

The northern part of the bay (where Cook was killed) has a marine reserve with good snorkeling, an underwater plaque on the spot where he fell and a monument on the land. The only way to get to the reserve/monument is by boat/snorkeling tour, a pretty steep hike down, or by kayak from the car park on the southern end of the bay. We rented kayaks from some locals near the car park and kayaked over (it used to be illegal, so you'd have to be hush-hush about it). Also, there's some stores up on the highway near Captain Cook that rent stuff (but not sure how you get them down to the water). If you have time, this is a cool snorkeling option with the history and all, but if you don't have as much time, the Two Step/Place of Refuge option (see tips below) is more user-friendly.…see moresee less
This is an all day activity. It's a long drive. I've had a few couples almost ruin their relationship because they didn't realize how long the drive is.
