Coolest Hotels Ever
Live is too short to stay at boring hotels. You can stay in a rooms that were wine casks, or in a 747 that used to span the globe, or even in a relaxed room in the Queensland rainforest. Here are some my favorites.
OK, this place is crazy-expensive. And I generally disapprove of high-priced hotels. But I am determined to spend at least one night in every hotel that used to be a plane. I've been in 2 of the 4 that I know about, so I have no choice but to stay here sometime.
I don't know about you, but nothing puts me a more vacation-y state of mind than a couple of coffins. In addition to the coffin room this place also offers a room completely padded in green leather and as well as one completely covered in mirrors.
We stayed in the hostel portion - the rooms were cozy wood-paneled numbers with bunk beds. The bathrooms are about as nice as you'll ever see. There's also a drying room for those who get their clothes soaked in the frequent wet weather.
I was super-excited to spend a night here. It's amazing what someone can do with a grounded jet, some imagination and a wee bit of funds. The question is ... why don't more people recycle on such a grand scale?
A beautiful teak interior, a killer view, and monkeys cavorting all over the place. It's also close to El Avion, an old freighter converted into an awesome bar that slings a mean sangria.
There's more to Woodlyn Park than just a Bristol freighter turned into two hotel suites with mini-kitchens - there's also yacht ad railroad car suites and Hobbit houses. And sheep wandering around - for those who get lonely traveling solo.
Full kitchen, right on a trolley line, quiet, friendly staff, awesome design. And a reasonable price to boot. I don't always go to Portland ... but when I do, I prefer the Inn at Northrup Station.
